I'm trying o figure out which notch is TDC on this 4 notch pulley. I'm thinking it's the second from the left but Muir and Bentley differ. 1972 SB

Thanks

You can always pull out #1 sparkplug. Then use a small wood dowel, insert it into the sparkplug hole an see when the piston reaches its highest mark. Look at your marks, and it will tell you. However, be careful when you do this. Get the piston pretty close before inserting the dowel

I also have a '72 Square and have noticed the inconsistency between Muir and Bentley, particularly regarding timing for our model year (which requires a specific procedure). If there is a conflict between the two, go with Bentley--especially concerning the timing procedure for a 72. But I agree that there is an easy way to figure it out using the dowel method in case you have a different fan.

I did some digging and apparently the 1st notch is 5ATDC, 2nd TDC, 3rd 5BTDC, and 4th 7.5BTDC. I'll use the dowel to validate it's the second notch. Thanks so much for the help.

That is consistent with my understanding. I time my '72 according to Bentley, and it says to time to the third notch, which is 5BTDC.
