Don't give up, when there's a will, there's a way. Have you tried to call John's Bug Shop? They sell Berrien/ACME bodies and host an annual VW show in the Niagara area. Perhaps they can refer you to a friendly client that can help you out.

We've been to the June Jitter Bug before and there were quite a few Ontario buggies and they even had a rail that was licensed. |

Go to a local street rod meet and ask them who insures them. |

What are you trying to insure? I mean does your ownership say 1968 beetle? Or is it a special construction? I'm in Ontario with an ownership that says 1970 beetle. Will need insurance in about a yr. A friend of mine through Lant has a 1968 beetle ownership for his f/g buggy. |

Its says 1957 dune buggy on my ownership. Since the buggy was insured under my dad with hagerty and he was passing in down to me, hagerty gave me some special consideration and are now allowing me to open a policy!!!
Believe me it was a battle though. Good luck to any body else trying to insure one of these cars. You may have better luck if your ownership says modified beetle. Somthing needs to be done about this situation. Start talking to your local car clubs about this. |

I am in Alberta and my buggy is not finished yet but I spoke to my insurance broker. He said there is one company he works through that will insure it with liability only. None of the other companies he works with will even look at it. |

Dunnebuggy1957 - glad to see Hagerty stepped up and insured you!
I had the exact same nightmare last July when I was trying to get my buggy on the road in Ottawa after not having insured it in Ontario in 18 years! I contacted all the companies named in this thread and a dozen more. I even called John's looking for leads! I was starting to freak because I'd already put a ton of time and cash into it. I did so because Lant had given me a quote (not in writing) in the spring and told no problem and to call them back when I'm ready. When I called in July they told me they "just" stopped insuring buggies! If the quote was in writing they would have honored it....but I suspect the guy who quoted me dropped the ball!
I finally went to Volkfest in Embrun and someone put me on to Kirby Masson Insurance (brokers) here in Ottawa. They found me insurance with a company that does Facility Insurance. Seems facility is the only option left in Ontario. I also worked with another broker in Richmond would also found facility insurance with a different company. The pricing was within $1.
77bugger - call Kirby or your local broker.
BTW - I needed to provide an appraisal with photos and they listed it was a VW Roadster.
Agreed this would be a good sticky! |

I have heard that because facility is used for very high risk drivers that the price is very high. If you dont mind what are your rates and are there any restrictions like the ones lant/hagerty have; _________________ Licensed Automotive Service Technician

Dan, it seem high at $1663 per year, but I dropped it down to $2.54 per month in the winter, so reasonable.
Who are you with and what are you paying?
I thought facility was for hight risk drivers too, but I have a clean record (other than one minor speeding ticket 4y ears ago). Both brokers told me, in these cases, facility is for high risk vehicles that they don't think are safe and are custom made. |

I bought my buggy in Idaho last summer and drove it up to Fort McMurray, Alberta. After the inspection was complete I started shopping around for prices.
RBC was willing to give me insurance, but the price was very high. During some more digging on of the agents told me to check out Competition Insurance out of Edmonton (http://www.competition.ca/) Sharon from Competition was great to work with and helped me with any questions. I had to send in pictures of the buggy, so they knew full well what I was insuring. They gave me a great policy through Hagerty, about 25% of the cost of the RBC policy with better coverage.
Only catch was I had to sign a letter saying I would not be taking it offroad. |

I forgot to mention that I have no restrictions...like no offroading. Not that I plan on doing much anyway. |

I had heard about this when I purchased my buggy but thought where there is a will there is a way...just getting started with my broker the last week and very frustrated as the summer speeds along.
Here is the last email from Hagerty...
Thank you for contacting Hagerty! We understand your concern and appreciate you bringing this to our attention.
In the U.S., our underwriting company there now allows us to consider original Meyers Manx dune buggies built between 1964 and 1971, as long as they are not used for off-roading and the insured has provided proof such as the owners card and/or picture of the emblem and serial number plate. Unfortunately, we do not have these same guidelines available in Canada.
Additionally, while there is no specific decline rule applicable for dune buggies in Alberta, unfortunately we are unable to offer coverage on them in Ontario per decline rule # 7.35. If you have any further questions regarding the details of the decline rule, you are welcome to contact our Canada program underwriting company, Aviva.
We do apologize for any disappointment or inconvenience. If you have any further questions or if we may be of additional assistance, please don't hesitate to contact one of our broker service representatives at (800) 747-5348 and thank you for your business!

That email was sent to me after I sent them this post from this great forum...

May have to get in touch with this lawyer...

Have them define 'off-road'...
- a dirt road is not a sand dune, beach, mud pit, or Baja 1000.

Hi, Great forum. I have a 1967 vw Manx style. I have owned since 1997. I had it in storage the last 3 years and this year when I got it out and wanted to add insurance I ran into the same problem. So far I haven't found anyone to insure it. |
