Looks like I need a fuel pump for my project. I did a little reading and I'm not sure if I should buy a new one (quality?) or one of the original rebuilt units that a few people are refurbishing (expensive - $200 approx). I think I should aviod the cheap, Chinese-made junk. I'm open to rebuilding my own one too, but I hear the rebuild kits are not the best quality.

Anybody have experience/suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

Is your current one rebuildable? Most of the late model pumps are not.

I have a rebuild able sitting on the shelf, but haven't looked Into build parts..
OG is almost always better..
With that said, I put a late model aftermArket pump when I built my engine and haven't had any problems(<1500miles/yr use)...

I'd build the original, when ya can, but get a newer one to get ya going now, and have as a spare later if needed!

Many have used various aftermarket fuel pumps with no apparent problems. There are actually "Pierburg" brand fuel pumps very similar to
the originals available, from the German company that now owns the "Pierburg" brand, but I know of noone in the U.S. selling them. AFAIK there are no rebuild kits available that are not completely bogus ripoffs, but these guys (this guy?) seem to know what they're about, and will rebuild your stock pump at a steep price:

Thanks guys. I think I have the original pump on my car. It has a screw on top, which I understand means it can be opened and rebuilt, but like I said, the quality of the rebuild kits appears to be poor.

I think I'll do what GI Joe suggested - buy an aftermarket one for now, to get the car running and maybe it will be fine.

The pumps with 1 screw can only replace the screen/filter.

Being "rebuildable" is of no use whatever, unless there are actually useable rebuild kits available. Are such things available in Europe? The only
rebuild kits I've seen being sold by European vendors is the same trash being sold in the U.S. Does Pierburg offer a kit for their pumps?

I picked up a replacement pump (Euromax) and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will work for at least a while.

Now, seems like a stupid question and I can't find a clear photo to refer to, but does the gas go in (from gas tank) at the bottom of the pump and out (to carb) on top?
