I also used the Humvee belts in mine. I had to make a bracket to offset them and make them level, but they work great and were cost effective. _________________ Chuck in Socal

Thanks Bryan!
I am following your lead and buying a set of the HumVee belts as well. For the price its definitely worth a shot. I found my mounting bolts and Im sure I can make them work one way or the other. |

I got the Humvee ones as well and then chucked them. If you have a Ghia and want to retain the 60s/70s look, the Humvee ones are cheap and look like they are from 1984. Utilitarian, yes -- style that reflects the Ghia, no. |

I have them in my bug (non-vert) too and love them. Used 3/16 steel bent in a 90* bend. I LOVE them!!! The cover would be nice but not sure if it will fit, and the hook is not needed anymore. _________________ Stupid people do stupid things. |

There have been previous discussions on this. I also used the Humvee belts on my '69.

... I'm not worried about originality.
It's just a car. Never got into the 'over-restored, better than it ever left any Factory' cars.

I'm hoping the HumVee belts will look OK in mine. Interior is pretty nice but it's just basic black. As little as I payed for them it won't be that big of a loss if I don't use them.
I'll try to remember to post pics when I'm done. Should be sometime next week. |

I also went with the gotbelts. And went with the 5'' stubby buckle because my non stock seats slide all the way back to the rear to fit my 6'3 frame. So no need for a long floppy buckle.....
I also mounted the base on the pivot point because it actually works better there on a vert, Because the pivot point on a vert is ridiculously low. Can't see how it would be less safe.

I'm sure offense was taken with that "just a car" thing - but I understand the guy's original intent there - while my car is all stock and I like originality as much as the next guy I used the Humvee retractable belts because it is one area where safety and utility trumps originality. If I were anywhere close to councours-correct I would have the original lobster claw belts in there, which lack much in convenience and safety.
Additionally, the Humvee belt quality and appearance is very much like the three-point retractables later used when safety standards demanded them. The more expensive equivalents sold as classic-VW-specific seemed to me to differ only in that they are available in colors and that some of the bits and latches had chrome or emblems on them, which didn't fit with the original look, to my eye. My original belts were very plain, very black, and very crispy.
"it's just a car" - granted a very unique and special classic car, much loved here, but in my opinion not nearly as safe as cars with anti-locks, airbags, etc, so the belts are an area where I can offset that shortcoming a little. |

I didn't take any offense just having a little fun!
Its his car he can do with it as he wants. I am in no way stuck on originality. Heck my seats and door panels are not original...as well as some other things on the car.
Just pointing out that the belts from Gobelts look like they would have come on the car originally...if you are ordering them anyway...just an added bonus but I did not buy them for that reason.
I agree about the claw belts. I am sure they work fine if you fiddle with them enough but I got tired of messing with them. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |
