Keep on keeping on, brother!
Brent sent me the link to a guy who did his bases right.
User "M113"
This guys build is gnarly.
Only two pages... hardly seems fair, eh?
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=541654
From his build:
As far as the texture I used a Antracite base coat and first sprayed an even coat until everything was solid color. Then I choked the air off to the gun until the paint was spitting out. Normally you don't want this. After I sprayed a flattened clear that was pre-flatted. All this I learned from Bryan Nunes, so I can't take credit for that. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Was back in the shop yesterday and began working on the hood and hatch. By the end of the day I had clean them up and moved onto the fender skirts, then drivers door and fender. I hope to have these sorted out today. That leaves my rear fenders to handle tomorrow. I'm planning on shooting epoxy and primer on all of these tomorrow afternoon if possible. Only pic of my progress from yesterday was while working on the hood and fender.
More to follow! _________________ MonT3

Not much of an update today for the past few days. I have some areas on the rear fender that need some heat shrinking. So I'm going to wait until Thursday to get back at it as my work week starts tomorrow to Thursday and then I have some time off to tackle the fenders with some schooling on heat shrinking. Also have been collecting some other pieces to get to the blaster to get cleaned up and have some pieces coated. Hope to get more done at the end of the week. _________________ MonT3

My off time has come to an end. I took another week off from work and spent my time at my buddies boot camp learning a how to shrink metal, working dings and glazing and lots of sanding. The major stuff is done so the epoxy went on, seam sealer, primer and raptor. I was also taught how to block sand with guide coats on the panels. Was a great week in all. So after the outer panels were all primed up, I masked off the holes to include the rear fender vents and sprayed down the raptor. Happy with the end results...
I masked off the vents so no major spatter would come thru. I'm going to use a different undercoating on those two areas...
Got some good coats in and around the headlight bowl...
Also, My buddy introduced me his upholstery guy. I asked about doing my door panels, front and rear seats. I don't want nothing overly custom so I asked if he could do something sensible with the material I have. I also asked to upgrade the padding with more current materials like foam, etc. Will be getting the deposit to him to order what he needs then he'll contact me to get started. That was a good feeling knowing this is going forward as well.
Oh, and my buddy made the comment that I'll be doing to the paining myself. I tried to talk my way out of it but he's insisted on it. My stress level went up a bit. I guess I have a couple of months of block sanding to do before I get to that. Just have a few things to get to the blaster to get cleaned and some pieces coated. _________________ MonT3

You're making great progresss there Monte. Your "instructor" is really going all out getting you to learn body working skills. I think by the time it comes to painting the car, you'll be ready and will have the confidence to knock it out. Great job. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Over the last couple of days, I placed the fenders back on the shell to do some block sanding. Actually was glad I didn't mate the shell to the pan as sanding the lower portion of the fenders would have been a PITA, even with the smaller stand I made to rest the mounted shell/pan on it. So I'm going stick with this set up for now. The block sanding is going well and with the guide coat, I'm finding the low spots to glaze over once I finish the fender up. Since my buddy had this sanding block, I really took to it and had to get one for my own work - http://www.eastwood.com/adjustable-flexible-sander-15-inch.html. This tool is pretty cool. Anyhow, here's my wagen coming along...
Got several coats of primer over the epoxy and am using 180 grit on the sanding block...
The roof got some sanding as well...
Here's where I realized I made a mistake with the raptor so I'll remove the spots where the door hinge will meet these mounts. Easy fix....
And here I need some help/advice/guidance. My upholstery guy wanted to use a panel board rather than the hardboard as he wanted to use some staples when making my door cards. The thickness is under a 1/4in. Any suggestions on how I can get this card to take on the contour of other inner door to get the best fit possible? I'm thinking of wetting the board and place an anvil (or some other form of weight on it in hopes of the getting the end result I'd like. Any ideas are appreciated.
I still have a some sanding on the panel to do as well as cleaning the window crank hole. I have to get these cards done up and ready to go by next weekend as the foam material is on order.
I also had the chance to drop off some pieces with my sandblaster to have some pieces cleaned and some coated. I almost made the mistake of handing over my air cleaner then remembered there's some fiber element in the cover. I tried fiddling with it thinking it come apart but after a bit I decided a good coat of Black paint will be better. I placed a double coat of masking tape over my bumpers and guards so my buddy can blast the inside of the bumpers and guards as they've got alot of surface rust on them.
My roof rack was also disassembled and handed over to get cleaned up and recoated. It'll be handed over to one of wood working coworkers along with some fresh Teak boards. Looking forward to seeing that project completed. _________________ MonT3

Way to kill it!
Gotta feel good to be finally sanding after ALL of that rust repair you've been through.
You are very fortunate that your body guy is willing to teach and help you to do the job.
It will come out so much nicer than if you just paid somebody... _________________ Bus Motor Build

Got a call from my upholstery guy who let me know he had gotten the materials in and wanted to get started on my seats. We met up and I handed the seats over. We talked some on the panels and Z arm rests. When I got back home the arm rests were bugging me so I took a break from sanding and removed the cracked and torn vinyl and foam. I began to play with the idea of making my own arm rests so I made a small box, cut some slits for the mounting points, drilled a few holes and shot some foam in the box.
Didn't turn out quite the way I thought it would have. I'm going to give it another try with different material...
While the foam was drying, I mounted the doors and then it was back to sanding. pretty much spent the afternoon at it. Got at the hood too. Will be sanding the passenger door then work up some glaze for some low spots.

Maybe try the 2 part pourable PU foam, I think that will work better than the spray can stuff and try and use some mold release on your wood box as well. |
Thanks Racoguy! I'll check around and see if I can find it along with the mold release. _________________ MonT3

I've used hairspray with good results as well, didn't try it for foam though. _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.

Way to go Monte. Looking damn good, and you're getting real close to getting it into paint.
Keep up the good work, and I look forward to the next update. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Appreciate the comments guys.
Glaze on, sand off. Glaze on, sand off. Pretty much all I've done most of the afternoon. Been slow going. We're expecting snow this weekend so not sure how much I may be able to get done but since the garage is dusty, I'll press forward with more sanding of the glaze in there. This is #1 of 3 prime/sand/glaze/ sand processes my buddy told me I'll be going thru. So maybe next weekend I can get the cars body back to my buddy's for primer so I get on #2 of 3.

Looking good. You're at that put glaze on, sand it off, repeat a bunch of times (kind of like wax on, wax off). At this point, it's all just labor now.
This is the point that Steve will really hate, as you don't really see any progress, as it'll look the same for days, weeks, and or even months, without changing. Keep up the sanding, as that's what it'll take to get it right. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Monte, when you get your PU foam and pour the arm rests you are going to be making then once you have the final shape you want in foam coat the item with a couple of coats of EPOXY resin, NOT polyester resin as it will eat the foam!
I just made a dash for my T34 and coated the dash with epoxy resin before I put the closed cell foam on, makes the whole thing a lot more durable and a lot stronger so it's well worth doing. _________________ https://www.facebook.com/pages/West-Worx/460154187360186 |
