You can find the transmission final drive ratios in the HBB off road section...Look up the "transmissions for Dummies" sticky.....I believe a 1970 Bug w/IRS would be a 4.12 ring and pinion ratio. |

If your 70 Beetle had a 1200 or 1300cc engine, it would have a 4.37:1 R&P. If it had a 1600, it would have a 4.12 R&P. _________________

I would wait if you are buying parts to confirm anything that might be unkown until you look in there. best indicator of a replacement part is finding the tranny code and checking with a parts supplier. I would avoid rebuilding it yourself it is actually chaeper to buy a rebuilt one moost of the time. |

It was only north America that got IRS in standard beetles, being in Germany it will be swing axle unless it was automatic or been converted and as Bruce said the ring and pinion will depend on what engine it had.
If its 1200 or 1300 (car will drum front brakes) 4.375 or 1500 (disc brakes) is 4.125
Only north America got 1600 beetles in 70 so it wouldn't have been that originally. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

And Australia in 1976. I know it's an obscure country, but they got IRS std Beetles with manual gearboxes there. You should visit there and see them at the car shows. _________________

Yeah I hear they have good VW shows
I left the Oz 76 out to avoid confusion as not many on here would know about them.
Anyway interesting that someone would go to all the effort of importing a US car to Germany. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?
