Wow, you have come quite a ways with this car, way to stick with it. How long will it be at the painters? Having just gotten mine back from paint, the work of putting it all back together is both rewarding, very tedious and time consuming. Great job!

They say one month. I have emphasized that time is of the essence. I want to be driving it this summer.

PostPosted: Thu Mar 26, 2015 4:34 am    Post subject: which distributor Reply with quote

I ended up with two distributors:

a SVDA petronix flame thrower, installed and engine runs with this (cam broken in using it)

a DVDA OG one, not the exact number for this car, rebuilt by Philbin (I presume to match the stock advance curve with correct springs, etc.)

I'm not sure if its worth swapping this German one back in. I'd have to do it perfectly to maintain the timing. Or I could run the flamethrower and block the retard vacuum port.

Any thoughts on this?

i learned this stuff the hard way:

oil cooler goes on BEFORE cylinder tins

exhaust goes on AFTER sled tins

frontmost tin may be impossible to attach whie engine is on stand

to reinstall emgine put a tiny bit of grease on input shaft remove starter and have tranny in gear. get help to jiggle the engine in place

i cant imagine tightening those 4 engine bolts with the body on.

restoring a bug takes 3x as long as you think it will Shocked

Holy cow! Is there a VW engine in there somewhere? Is the body going to fit back over the engine as it is? Seems like you will have to take a lot off to put your newly painted body back on.

visited the paint shop monday. car was supposed to actually be done by then. two more weeks says the owner. judging from the amount of work done so far, I'm thinking two more months.

I'm sure the wait is about to drive you crazy. It'll be worth it though, you've done a wonderful job on the car! Smile

I think body shop time is measured differently than regular time it seems Sad

One day body shop = 1 week our time lol. Not poking at you, I went through this on my paint and was pleasantly surprised at the 6 week turnaround. They were working it in between insurance work.

exactly - it sits in the back only to be touched during slow times. but its annoying because I told the guy I didn't want that to happen and to quote a price that reflected getting it done fast. he did, and he quoted a month turn around. If I new it would sit in the back like usually happens I'd have haggled much more on the price. anyway they do a lot of show cars so I'm hoping for a kick ass job.

At least!

And I learned after building my first Beetle engine that those air deflector shields that snap in between the cylinders have to go in before you put the heads on. Mad

i read that headrest speakers worked well for verts.

bought a set of miata replacement speakers from Clearwater. had to cut the nubs off that had the mounting holes. didnt need them.

used a 2 3/4" hole saw to cut through top layer of foam. the back of the speaker reaches all the way to the metal headrest skeleton.

not shown: you can heat headrest covers in the dryer. they are a mega tight fit. maybe some plastic wrap over the foam here would help. after covers were on i could see the speaker outlines Sad luckily the speakers box had several pieces of maybe 1/4" low density foam. i pushed some in to cover the speakers and viola:

notes: speakers are wired in series. there is a diagram on clearwaters website. hooked the speakers up to my home stereo, put them on my couch like a headrest for a test listen. they sound just fine and i didnt need to perforate the headrest vinyl which was a relief.
