I have heard that the two books that are must haves are the bently and muir. Unable to locate these books by these names but have found these:
Volkswagen official service manual with a bunch of dates (its green in color with a yellow bus at an angle) - my best guess is this is the bently.
*
and the other:
"for aircooled vws hi performance history suppliers the dread auto trottel trouble, trouble, trouble how to keep your volkswage alive a manual of step by step procedures for the compleat idiot" 19th ed.
****
are these the books i need? is there diff ones ?

This is indeed Muir's Idiot Book.

Good Luck with the bus and welcome to the family. It's nice here.

Book #3 of that trilogy is "How to rebuild your Volkswagen Air Cooled Engine" by Tom Wilson. HP Books #255. About $15 well spent.

Number 1 and number 3. I never have found a real need for #2. But never the less, it is fun and interesting.

Hiya Bens,

A couple of things of which to be aware when putting hands on VW references materials.............

Bentley's Official VW Service Manual is a better buy used rather than new. Yes, the price will be lower, but you will also stand a good chance of getting wiring diagrams in full color rather than the black and white of the current issues.

On the other hand, it is advisable to buy the newest Muir you can. The newer editions have additional sections which deal with content not in Muir's original issues.

And.............I would suggest that any novice in this area seriously consider getting an edition of the Clymer workshop manual. This book is now out of print (but is occassionally available at resellers such as Powell's) but is an excellent beginner's book in that it assumes nothing about your knowledge of VWs. On the other hand, Bentley does assume you basically know what you're doing.

As I mentioned, Powell's is a good source as is Amazon.com $40 for both the Bentley and the Muir (both used) would be a fair price although I think they can be had cheaper.

Of course the Bently is the best. The Muir book while interesting and a fun historical read has so many items in it that range from poor information to absolute "no-no's".....that I dont recomend it for any beginner.

The clymer manual is a mixed bag. They do have aome good measurements and lists of specs........but covers only the bare basics and has horrible photo accuracy. Its thpical to find pictures of totally different vehicle types for a given task with the caption or inference that they are close enough. Also....it does assume that you have no experience so it offers very little in depth information on things like the transmission. Ray

They mention the aforementioned pamphlet: "Group Z4: Instructions for Operating Passenger Cars and Transporters in Tropical Climates"

Sound like the German Version "Tropenanleitung für VW-Personenwagen und -Transporter", Gruppe Z4, March 1972, Volkswagen, Order Nr. 14.5.074.00 with 24 pages. It explains some additional available equipment from VW and some standard behavior in tropical regions using oil or drove thru water or desert tracks...
