x2! that sounds like a really cool book. I did a quick search on the web and found lots of references and broken links.

Bernard, I'm extremely interested in that book. I was thinking of using my extra space behind the engine for a cyclone filter; since trucks don't have the gas tank right there.

Why not install a second tank? Wink

There exists an excellent book related to this subject, called "Sahara Handbook", by Simon & Jan Glen (published by Roger Lascelles--Cartographic & Travel Publishers). The Australian authors ran tours throughout the Sahara, and their vehicle of choice was the Bay window Westy camper. Chapter 18 "Survey of Potential Vehicles", covers all the vehicles likely to be found in the area, and their respective strengths and weaknesses, paying particular attention to Volkswagen Transporters. They mention the aforementioned pamphlet: "Group Z4: Instructions for Operating Passenger Cars and Transporters in Tropical Climates", as well as, Volkswagen part numbers for essential modifications. To wit:
VW Option M 220--ZF Limited Slip Differential.
VW Option M 153--"Cyclone" Pre-cleaning Air Filter, VW part #029-129-607A
-or- a two stage filter such as: American Donaldson, -or- the French Tecafiltre.
VW Option M 073 Belly Pans, to add torsional strength.
Plus skid plates as outlined in the "Group Z4 pamphlet.
They also go into great detail on:
Engine set-up (compression ratio, dwell angle, valve clearances, etc.)
Suspension set-up (take off your sway bars!)
Load distribution (don`t overload the front of your vehicle!)
Spares--spares--spares--and MORE spares)
Plus a wealth of knowledge on how to handle:
Desert conditions.
Sand, washboards, VERY bad roads, NO roads, etc.
Breakdowns (can be dangerous and/or deadly, in some desert areas--even in the U.S. ie. Death Valley).
Now while you may never travel in such exotic conditions, the techniques for sand travel may keep you from getting stuck (or un-stuck), on some beach somewhere! Good book! Find one!

Mocked up the bumper and welded up the brackets to adapt the GoWesty vanagon steel bumper to the bus. The final position I ended up going with is in the second picture below. Tomorrow I'll section out the extra length from each side to snug the ends up next to the bus.

Edit: after sectioning out additional length, adding corner fill plates and a bracket to lock the jack down with.

Sound like the German Version "Tropenanleitung für VW-Personenwagen und -Transporter", Gruppe Z4, March 1972, Volkswagen, Order Nr. 14.5.074.00 with 24 pages. It explains some additional available equipment from VW and some standard behavior in tropical regions using oil or drove thru water or desert tracks...

G'day all. This where I'm up to on my 4x4 conversion. all the positions are now sorted. Now to build & weld the mountings on to the beam & have the axles modified. I have offset the diff to allow the tailshaft to run beside the sump not under it

Yes I did as a matter of fact. It is a good read. Just haven't picked it up very much.

I skimmed through, and it's cool. The Jeff Hibbard's Baja Bug book is a lot more useful though.

This is the best topic here for me. I have all my undercarriage done and I was prepared to lover my 70' avendture wagen like I done with all other buses before. After seeing all this cool posts I change my mind and I am gonna get high off the ground. My engine is already done, it's a 1776 with 36 Dellortos, short earybay trans, 15 inch rims. My concern is that with bigger tires I will have a lack of power. What is the limit tire choose for this setup?
Second question, I can get CV joints and transaxles from Porsche 924 or 944, do they have a same lengt like a bus or do I have to make any modification?
