I just put the "new to me" 92x74 motor in my 67' bug. If I take it for some hot laps around town, shifting a few times at 6k and come home I have no problems. Did a 50 mile drive Sunday averaging 65 mph on the freeway(3500rpm) almost the entire drive and I have oil coming from behind the front pulley and flinging all over the place. I have a breather with 1/2" hose out of the generator tower but that's it. Is it time to add breathers to my valve covers?

Had the same problem. Maybe you are having excessive crankcase pressure problems, but I've found that aftermarket aluminum pulleys can and will sling oil like this. Try a sand seal or even putting a German steel pulley on it.

I do have an aftermarket aluminum pulley. I'll see if I have a stock pulley laying around.

Are any aftermarket pulleys good to help solve this? I like having degree marks on the pulley.

An aftermarket pulley with a degree ring is nice to have.

Do you have the breather going anywhere? It should be connected to at least one carb. The stock oil filler with proper tubing to the carb is needed. After that if there is still oil leaking out, I'd vent at least one valve cover. After that, I would suspect something else.

Gene Berg pulleys are high quality and have a degree wheel.

My breather is just a small K&N filter. I'll try a stock pulley first. Then breather to a carb if that doesn't solve it. That Berg pulley is nice but a little on the high $ side

Fixed it! Empi breather box. Generator stand, 1/2 valve cover, and right carb all going to the box. That was an easy $28 fix. Thanks for the help

Glad to hear you didn't vent the 3/4 cover.

The box by itself didn't do anything IMO. I think when you added the one to the filter top you created a bit of vacuum, which is always a good thing.

There are better solutions if you wanted to upgrade in the future. P/M me if you'd like to know.

How did you vent the valve cover?

At high rpm the 3/4 side valve cover will fill up with oil as it is pumped up the tubes by the crank and rods. After the rockerbox/valve cover is full it can push it up the breather tube and out the breather box, making a bigger mess or starving the engine of oil in extreme circumstances. If you don't have a fuel pump you can also vent that which will do more than venting the valve covers.

Yes I didn't do the 3/4 side due to the amount of oil that fills the valve cover.
I used the bulkhead style fittings that came with the kit. Pictured at the left
