1958 Volkswagen Beetle Sedan
Estimate: $35,000 - $45,000 | Without Reserve
Chassis: 1933828

CAR HIGHLIGHTS
TECHNICAL SPECS

An Exceptional Survivor
Outstanding Color Combination
A Charming VW with Outstanding Integrity
A Rare Opportunity to Buy a Low-Mileage VW Type 1
Believed to Have Largely Original Finishes

Key word here is 'Believed'.

After 57 years, I would expect to see some wear in spots. Wolfsburg emblem, air cleaner sticker, carpet, all looks like repop's.

One should definitely consider the car's history. They say it has 11k miles... So maybe it just sat in a showroom its entire live? These things exist.... But I don't really believe it myself ... Smile

Looking closely I see dings and dents all over the car including a spot of missing paint in front of the left front turn signal. Also the drivers vent window latch is gone, this is not something a restorer would leave. I would have to see the car in person to really decide but I think it's probably right.

Birth certificate came after just 6 1/2 months of waiting. A few of the things on it don't really make sense. Like 12volt system, locking passenger handle etc.

Lee posted pics of his 58 here,

I think his 58 is painted Glacier Blue.

Also, I wonder why the paint/upholstery section has such lousy photographs....it seems like there are plenty of owners that could send in quality photos to make the paint/upholstery section more helpful.

Try this place out of Germany, they carry a lot of the original cloth for VW interiors.

I hope this helps,

I have just picked up an Australian, but German built, 1959 sedan. It's a nice unwelded original car with only a recent external respray, dropped spindles up front and banded wheels on the back. (I plan on changing all of this).

Unfortunately the original headliner is 'cactus' as they say in Australia. I've not seen one like this before but it does look to be original and I would love to be able to find a replacement fabric to match.

Has anyone seen or have a headliner like this;

Can you post some pics of the interior?

Paint job looks pretty shinny, did it sit in the bar for 30-yrs with this paint job?

Looks like it has 65 and newer doors and seats, hood is also newer.

Sorry it took so long

Hood's original Its just been shaved. The doors are from a 1967, the front seats are newer but comfy Laughing Yes and the front fenders are not correct but I think the running board is. My theory is the doors and front fenders seats and entire drive train got robbed to restore a car and the first prior owner saved it. It was in a garage for 30 years fluids all maintained except the transmission. It looked like swamp sludge when I cleaned it out. The cars original colour was a silver and the rear seat is red and white. I'm wondering if the rear seat is original. I got a correct steering wheel for it. I'm not gonna "restore" it because I like its 80's charm.

The only thing I'd like to get is proper doors for it. Since the doors are black and swaping over the interior isn't an issue. The larger windows and the small windows just drive me crazy Evil or Very Mad

Also anybody know about this?

it came with the car. Surprised

Also for those curious this is what i presume is the original colour (It's everywhere in the car. under the carpeting on the inside the under the hood the hood itself, the engine bay, the decklid!)

Oh yeah also the front apron is not correct sadly. It's a bastard but I love it dearly. Rolling Eyes

Very cool.
I am stealing it for the dealer page on the site.
It's probably a dealer give-a-way thing to get people to stop throwing crap out their window.

The back side of the backrest part of the seat or the upper part of the rear seat.

I still have many, many things to correct on the car (and I'm not going for a 100% restoration), but the '58 I bought is at least out and about now. True, there is no headliner and the interior is all black (seat covers, carpets, panels)...but they'll do while my budget catches up to my desires.

Unfortunately not. It's a P.O replaced the fenders with aftermarket units car, and I bought it without any turn signals. Unfortunately PO drilled the fenders for what I suspect were bullet turn signals, but he did so after paint without welding any mounts to the fenders Evil or Very Mad One of the many things that a) got me the car at a price I was happy with and b) I've had to repair.

Swap season hasn't started yet, so I haven't bothered to look for '58 above the fender signals. For the meantime, when I built the wiring harness, I set it up so the parking lamps currently act as turn signals, and with a switch of two wires will become proper parking laps once I install fender signals on the car.

To access the trim clips. Apparently the canadian standard had black caps as the bottom picture shows.

I'm combing the junkyard tomorrow for headlights and had a few questions.

1. are the terminals for the headlights supposed to be screw or spade type terminals?

2. what markings separate the 58-59 glass and headlight assembly from other years?

Thanks!,

Bret

Bret, the headlight bulb will be the standard spade style connector, and the parking lights are screw terminal style.

For the glass...

Totally bare--current repro
"SB19 SB20 SB21" across bottom, Hella logo only--late '63-early '80s
"E1.0671.01" across bottom, both Hella (top) and VW logos--'56-'63
- "25484" in lower left corner-- ~'59-'63
- "25484" along inside top of rim--'56-~'58
No "E" number, just Hella logo at top and VW logo at bottom--'53-'56
- No vestigial oval in center of lens--late '55-'56
- Vestigial oval in center--'53-'55

You need to look for the early style housings, like what's pictured below.
