It needed a lot of rust repair work after the boiling revealed pinholes.
Then, it got the fuel sender mod, and a big pick-up tube welded in.
There was also the vent tube added (welded) in.
Throw in an NOS big oval cap, and a new sender,
Plus bodywork, paint, cut and buff...
Call me a liar if you want,

No I believe you.... I just saw a $3000 custom decklid this weekend...
$3000 in just metal work making it real pretty...
So in the spirit of my old realm of kustom cars... 53 Buick lead sled being the last..
I was out in the garage staring at the nose of the 73.... what if.... I narrowed the peak to remove the vw emblem...and brought that peak down through a rounded out and smoothed nose.... kinda like a ghia? Personally the lines on the square back are pretty cool til you hit the nose and it gets all wonky... It would have to be done properly... subtle and enhance the flow on the nose....but ...what if? Essentially shave the bump for the license plate...and run that peak down the front ...maybe taper it off near the bottom...
*disclaimer...not wanting a flame war here... just open discussion. I already plan on bullet turn signals or something less clunky. |

Well, everything except the "continuation of the peak line" John has already done on his Lead Sled Fastback. Removing the peak and shaving the license plate hump do clean up the nose. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I don't doubt it. Just think some DIY is in order. Save the money for the paint job!
When I cleaned and painted mine I loosely followed the Ratwell guide:
http://www.ratwell.com/technical/FuelTankRestoration.html
I didn't use the POR15 kit due to mixed reviews and went with Red Kote instead. It's been in storage with 1/2 tank of gas for the last 3 years and 2 more to go... No use now, but in a couple years I'll have a decent report of how well it worked. _________________ 69 Fastback Build

If you haven't seen it already, check out the Winter's Tale Fastback thread, he did some great work like that. _________________ 69 Fastback Build

Very similar in concept.... I want to run the peak and remove the bottom ridge on the front making at smoother... the fenders would retain their shape...but protrude a bit more with the removal of the bottom ridge...

Scored a clean hood and two fenders for $100.
Not bad. WAY less rust on these. |

Mike, just so you know, that's not "East Coast" rust starting to show. I only say that, as I've seen those same places rust on Wyoming cars, Lousiana cars, Texas cars, and even on some of Mike's Oregon parts cars. Those areas are basically normal type 3 rust spots. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

My apologies...I made an assumption based on what I am learning is this car's Maryland roots.

Well, some of that is "east coast" repair work. And some of it is just plain BS repair work.
You don't have to apologize, what you're seeing is rust, and some rust repair. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

East Coast Rust,
California Bodywork!
Those Bondo'ed-in fenders are Cal Look for sure!
Looks like they removed those 'crash protector' impact absorber/rust trap dealies from the inner fenders.
Upper rear corners by the cowl - if you search for pics you might find some.
Otherwise, you would never know they were supposed to be there.
Are the front bumper mounts gone?
Is your plan to get this all back 100%?
Or just patch it up?
Pull the body off the pan?
Seems to me that's the only way to chase all the rust out.
Unfortunately, Minions are little help with this kind of work - too dangerous.
How old was your oldest, again?
Maybe deny him food until a section of stripping is done?
That's going to take some doing for sure.
Props to you for taking this on. _________________ Bus Motor Build
