Didn't work. BJ's will not survive the oven. They have a plastic piece on the other side of the stud. Mine oozed out. Sacrificed in the name of stupidity. Ah well. Guess I'll do the rest of the arms with Por 15 _________________ Brian H.

The seals for the box are not readily available as replacement VW steering box seals.
But they are readily available by using the dimensions. Most any industrial seal and bearing house will have replacements. Vanapple did that recently for his early steering box. _________________ Richard

I went to two industrial suppliers here and both of them said there weren't any in the US they could find. Funny thing is a quick entry of the dimensions got me a few results on EBAY and they're in the US and not too expensive.
I was planning on waiting to get them to see if they match up like they should and then posting up the details here.
Just for future reference;
late model seals needed for the steering box measure
16x24x7mm and
24X37x7mm _________________ Brian H.

Probably like the other day when I went to Autozone seeking wheel bearings for a Bug and their web page took me to a link it identified as a front wheel bearing, but below said it was for differential bearing outer race. Then the knuckleheads on their Chat and the fools at the local store all tried to just put me off to the listing I got online. This sort of trouble results from companies having employees who are incompetent computer jockeys with no knowledge of the product. _________________ Richard

That is why I always dig up the part number ahead of time and hand it to them to order to avoid crap like that.
For the record, I am a big fan of Timken bearings. They are in the same league as NTN, FAG, SKF, Fafnir...or pretty much any manufacturer in the World Bearing Association (WBA). Always great quality stuff whether timken makes it themselves or sources from another company in the WBA. AutoZone just happens to be a Timken products distributor. Score!

got my seals today to my surprise
box powder coated
seals fit nice
Finished box full of gear oil and on beam
trailing arms are curing their first coat of Por15 ATM.
I'm kinda rushed a bit now since I retired my winter beater last week and started driving my 92 chevy pickup which I just found out today is bleedin coolant between the intake and heads. And it's not warm enough for the Harley yet.

my beefy new rod barely cleared the hump after i installed it. Whew!
the cheapy new front tires, I actually like em alot
had to take a pic of the shiny powder coated parts while they're still clean
She's sitting level now. I was going to play with the rear but I decided to leave it. I think I welded the adjusters a bit overclocked. I have them screwed about halfway.
By the way, adjusters are pieces of crap. Before I had everything put together I had them cross threaded just like the old adjusters and the reason for this rebuild. cheap chinese crap. did I say crap? crap. If you're doing this yourself soon, do yourself a favor, buy a 12X1.25mm die and tap so you can clean up the screws and the adjuster. Only tap size I don't have of course.
So I dropped her off tonight to get an alignment. Very very nervous about this. No one else has touched her since she was mine. But I'm also very desperate to get a good alignment. I'm just hopeful last years' failed attempts were caused by my lack of expertise and not something that can't be fixed on the car... it would be sooo nice to have a VW that steered right and held tires for more than a couple months. _________________ Brian H.

Yeah I heard there was snow towards the east side of the state. Sucky. But then that evens us out for the lake effect we get over here the rest of the time.
It was definitely good to have it out last night even if I was limping it to the shop. _________________ Brian H.

Oh, I almost forgot, I finally got around to those leaky throttle shafts on my Kads too.
I read a write up done by the Kaddie Shack guy about how to do this last year some time and ordered some replacement bushings which sat on the shelf all winter. Well I started with the what I considered the worst side first. The nerve racking part of it for me was drilling out the original bushes and keeping the shaft alignment. That turned out to be a waste of worry. I bought a brand new 25/64" bit and instead of chucking it up in the drill press I decided to use my cordless drill and the vise to start off. As the bit bore down onto the bushing I noticed the bush started rotating quite freely. Excited, I bit down into it a bit more and as the drill spun the bush I pulled out smoothly and to my surprise the bush slid halfway out! From there I just had to use a pliers to remove them. I put epoxy on the new bushes and smacked them in with a plastic mallet but I don't think I sanded the shaft smooth enough because the teflon coating on the bushes was ripped which then bound up the shafts too. So I drilled them back out, epoxy hadn't had time to cure yet, and installed my second set without epoxy which allowed a little more play in the bush. Then I polished up the shaft a bit more with the 400 grit paper and with some grease applied carefully inserted with success. Now I just have to order another pair for the other carb.
All I had time to do is a rough mixture and accellerator adjustment but the black smoke seemed to start diminishing the more it run. While I was in there I also noticed the carb "bore" which is a separate replacaeable part was loose so I tightened up it's set screw. This could also have been a source of leaking gas into the carb circuit.
I can't wait to get her back so I can fiddle and see how better the carbs take a tune with these fixes. It was a little rough on the way to the shop but it also has old gas back from october prolly and a quick tune, like I said. _________________ Brian H.

those are venturis. 30 mm replacements from aj would work great. wake it up and make it more throaty.
I say that from experience.

She's a good ten footer'. She's showing her age though. I'd be surprised if my fenders don't break off this season. Lots of spiders showing. It's all good though. I use her and abuse her and I'm not afraid to fix 'er back when I'm done. Love this car.
I feel like a nervous father in the hospital waiting room right now. Feel the need to call and ask how the alignment is going. Pathetic. They scratch her I'm sueing! lol _________________ Brian H.

30mm huh? I'll have to look into that. That would speed up the charge. It's not like 917.5cc's a side warrants 40mm. That's what I was thinking as I was glancing at the 40 stamped in it. Like blowing down a hallway and expecting it to whistle. _________________ Brian H.

Just got a call from the shop and they said they might have to charge me more time because there's a bunch of loose "stuff" in the front end.
?
You're doing an alignment. I didn't think it was necessary to torque everything down just to drive it a few block down to your shop so you could tear it all back apart to adjust everything.
Well some of those fasteners are in places where we can't get an impact in to tighten them and it may take more time.
?
?
Well do what ya have to do, but I left all those loose knowing you'd have to be in there anyway. If you think that's worth more time then so be it.
WTF?
Heaven forbid they get a car in that has ALL new parts and everything comes apart easy instead of all salt corroded and dirty nasty. Yeah that definitely = charge more.
now I'm really worried. lol _________________ Brian H.

hopefully, they'll do it right. not much to do. I'm gonna wager they've never put in a caster shim before if they're confused about things sitting on the front seat.
You should of told them to lay down a bunch of cones and comb the perimeter. _________________ Herc |
