My driver side splines stripped in my torsion housing last weekend. Looks like I only had half engagement on the spilnes. Is that normal or did I assemble them poorly? Is there more room between the spring plates caps then the torsion springs can fill?

I don't want coilovers so I figure I'll fix it back like it was. Looks like I have to cut out the center section of the torsion tube and replace, but I haven't found any good info on it. I'd like to avoid adjusters as well if possible. Does any one sell replacement stock centers? I cannot find anything but the adjustable centers.

Think you have to get center section out of some junkyard resident... Splines should fully engage if not you may have wrong torsion bars or spring plates, torsion come in three different lengths you know...

SwayAway makes two replacement torsion housing centers with splines #7010 2in OD and #7010-1 2 1/4in OD that welds in place.
I have been involved with replacing the stock stripped center piece and installed one of the SwayAway ones. They are made out of stronger material then the stock one.
It really is something that is needed if using larger ten stock diameter torsion bars. From what I have seen it happens more in the later IRS torsion housings.
KarTek was were I got the one I replaced, or McKenzie's would be another place to try.

I replaced mine with the Sway Away unit mentioned above.
Kind of a tricky job to install it. The adjuster itself is pretty expensive too from what I remember.
Easiest way IMO is to have some buddies help you flip the car on to its side.
Thats how I did mine. Flipped the car on its side with the help of a Honda 4x4 quad and used a set of paddle tires to cushion the body. Worked well. Cool

What od housing would my 70 std beetle have? 2"?

So, I'm guessing I can replace this without pulling the body then? That would be most excelent.

I expect this to happen to my baja eventually. I'd imagine having the body off would be optimum for getting all the way around. especially if you Mig it and some migs have huge nozzles. The front tranny mount will most likely have to be replaced, transplanted as well.

I'd also imagine the best way to line it up would be to assemble everything together and tack it into place with the bars.

The 2in OD size will work for a stock torsion housing.
Yes you have to remove front mount to get to it and it also helps to cut out part of the lower tunnel to be able to get a complete weld around it.
Setting the torsion bars and spring plates into position does help with keeping things aligned, or you could use some round stock that fits inside the splines and is long enough to stick out ends. Then you just shim it to be centered.
