I can't seem to find a decent thread/build on someone putting an ecotec engine in a vw. I'm just curious on how they mount the engine in. I'm sure its not as easy as bolting it in? |

With any inline 4 cylinder water pumper engine, if you're going to really offroad the car, If you build engine mounts off the bumper cage below the engine, one slam of the skidplate onto terra firma can push the engine and all upwards and do some real damage.
At the bellhousing, there is usually frame members which go from the crossmember under the bellhousing and up to the cage structure. But at the sides or back end of the engine, the bumper cage is usually not so well supported.
I recommend bringing tension support rods down from the cage ahead and above the engine down to the sides of the block, rather than up from the bumper cage. _________________ Richard

Ive seen a lot of race cars that either hang them from the top side or usually start the mount closer to the tranny and shoot them back at an angle.
I've seen a number of them done on Class 10 cars with heim joints.
I would do as much as you can to make sure its solid and not going to screw things up when you bottom the car out.
Heres mine.
1/4 Steel Plate & 1'' .250wall chromoly tubing. The mounting holes on the block are not on the same plane so you either need to get trick and bend the plate or use spacers... I used 3/8'' ID steel bungs( re drilled to 10mm) and drilled the plate so that it slid over the bungs and then welded both sides.
I still might add another horizontal tube to mine to tie it in a little more.
I have some seriously cheesy mounts come out of some the local shops lately... don't be that guy

just for an idea this is how I did my quad4 which is related to the Eco.
The backbone of my frame is where the strength come in as it's tied at an angle to the lower tube and the upper frame above..
mount not welded in yet:
