Don't know what kind of heat you are asking about but this is good to 400 degrees and is gas/oil resistant.

Knowing exactly what you plan on using it for would be good. There is no one best sealant for every use. I probably have about a dozen tubes, cans, and jars of various stuff laying around.

is exactly what I want to avoid

initial use is on an oil breather cover (on a Pooschey, not a Vanagon)

Yamabond found at Yamaha motorcycle shops (engine case halves are bonded together ie no gasket) or GM 88861417 sealant is easier to find and probobly the same stuff. It has replaced ALL of my misc sealant tubes except copper exhaust sealant and anti sieze on my shelf.

No way, too many variables to expect to get by with one fits all sealant.

This is like people who own only ONE (1) Hammer and look at me like I've lost my mind when they see my selection of frequently used hammers hanging up and then my Drawer full of specialty hammers that I use once every couple of years.

They all have a particular use which enables you to do a given task efficiently.

Sure, you could use a Ball Peen to drive a nail...... But Really? Rolling Eyes

No...But Permatex Ultra Grey is and it seems to me to be identical to the grey sealant that I use directly from Subaru. It is now my favorite for general engine sealant.
Although...Im not sure what the OP is using it for. Very Happy

for engine case sealing, like the breather tower and the case halves, i used permatex aviation. works good, but spread thinly on toast... it also looks like marmite. i have not tried marmite, but i suspect it would work well too.

Does Permatex Aviation taste like Marmite or more like Vegemite? I'd like to know in case I need to lick excess off the engine case.

I've used it too on others recomendations from here and like it, so far just to give some extra sealing powers to thermostat housing, water pipe, rear heater, etc.

Yamabond or the very similar 3Bond sealants are pretty bulletproof against gas/oil in engine environments.

I like this "stuff". Pun intended. I still use the aviation gasket sealer on my T1 cases, and grease on pushrod tube gaskets, but for a breather tower on my Vanagon I would use this stuff....

Experiences vary. May depend on where and how you use this stuff.

Contrary to wythac, I found Permatex "the right stuff" very difficult to use (pressurized can), and ended up with severe leaks on an oil pan seal on my Bostig/Zetec. Poor adhesion noted when I pulled the pan (yes I meticulous . . . not a job you want to "do over" . . . aargh). (HCOP ReDo in my photo links)

Permatex "Hi Temp Red" was much easier to use (tube) and my engine has been leakless ever since. Available at most FLAPS.

GM engine assembly adhesive---the best of the best, and available at any local GM dealer.

I like to use Hondabond or GMS (available at Honda or GM respectively) both have fantastic adhesion qualities and seal well. Neither are inexpensive.

And agreed, there is no one sealant for every application. Be a student of the game and read, learn and experiment. After re-doing gaskets and loosing money (if you've ever worked on the line) you'll avoid the cheapo silicone sealers. Like the free tube of silicone you receive when you order a gasket kit off Ebay... save that for emergency roadside repairs, don't assemble with it.
