I recently purchased my first VW in bout 30 years. I bought a 1966 bug and it's still 6 volt. My voltage regulator was shot and i was lucky to find a NOS Bosch one on eBay. I found that it's pretty hard to find some of these old 6v parts. My question is, does anybody rebuild 6v voltage regulators. I know that people will buy back the old core of the generator to rebuild, but what about the the voltage regulator? I want to make sure that I don't throw the old one away if it still has value.

There is a guy in CA that redoes them to make all modern and digital.
I assume he buys cores too.

It's possible that a local electrical shop could rebuild/fix your existing regulator too, if there are any left in your area.

The hoarders lament: I better hang onto this as maybe I can get it fixed. I have a 6v starter and a generator that need rebuilding and I figure I will get them done as a package deal....someday. For that reason I would hold onto it. Do your heirs a favor and put a label on it that says "defective 6v vw".

There is a rebuilding procedure from Bosch. I have copy of it somewhere. If I can find it I will scan and post, unless someone has it handy??

Please do. I am sure it would fit in the technical portion here well.

Evileye, MY59 and Everett,

I finally found the rebuild procedure. To the best of my knowledge it pertains to both 6 and 12 volt units. Please be advised that I haven't attempted a rebuild myself so I can't vouch for its effectiveness.
Being that good used or NOS regulators are getting hard to find, I though I should at least find how to fix one.

If someone is attempting this, please post with step by step instructions with pictures.
