I'd like to keep as much OG metal as possible and I have a replacement panel but curious if you'd suggest to keep what's there? Do you think this is too much rust? The far side has some cancer that would remain if I didn't cut it out. This panel area is a bitch to weld\grind.

Maybe you could use only part of the replacement panel? _________________ My beetle is not competing with your beetle. I have the yellow beetle in my town. There is a red one, a green one ......

I would ... on a ghia I'm restoring, I replace the bottom 12 inches of almost the entire car. _________________ ----------------------

If I was to leave it, I would sandblast the rust clean, and then treat it with ospho to kill whatever little bit of rust might remain. If you're going that far, with new panels to give the car a new life, you've got to get all of the rust gone. Sandpaper and wire brushes aren't enough. |

Wire wheel, sandpaper, and phosphoric acid. Then let acid dry out (covering the area in plastic wrap will let the acid last longer by not drying out and work better) and repeat the process till all rust is gone and steel turns shiny silver color. If it buffs with the wire wheel a lead color there is more rust that needs to be removed.
Found while it takes time, this leaves as much of the metal as possible. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
