| 2000 Passat wagon automatic stuck in park. gear selector lever moves,gear display reads P in all gears. car wont move!!! cable?? plastic parts in shift mechanism? anyone had this problem? |

Could be the cylinder for the key. Basically the gear selector isn't being freed when the key is turned to start the car (the gear selector is locked in place until the key is turned to the on position) If that mechanism is faulty, you are stuck in park.
As to why the Gear selector lever still moves, I'm not sure what's going on with that, but that is what has happend to me. |

| These cars had a problem and recall for the brake switch. If you press the brake pedal and don't hear the solenoid trip the lockout, there is your problem. I do believe there is a manual release for this mechanism to allow for it's release if the keys are not available in case of towing and such. |

The control unit for the trans is in a plastic box under the front passenger carpet. If there was ever a water leak, water will get into the box and corrode the wiring and control unit. First thing I would do is scan the module for faults.
