Im guessing that that is your (possibly modified) ignition/starter exciter wire. On my '87 Westy, there are two wires there. _________________ 1987 2.1L 2WD Full Camper Kerouac |

That looks like the main power wire to the dash fuse/relay panel. In 86+ vans without factory AC that wire would be for EVERYTHING except the fuel injection power.

Thx, so it runs everything on the Van except the starter & FI injectors (including the ECU).
I have no A/C.
It is the wierdo early 1986 model with NO correct wiring diagram. |

It runs everything in the dash. In the engine compartment it runs the ignition coil and a few light loads. Except in early 86 vans you never quite know without checking. The general FI system gets battery power over the huge cable via the starter.

I have an 86 "plain jane" as well.
No PS
No AC
manual everything.
A treat to work on except that the FI wiring is as you say, not covered in the manuals.
I yanked all of the FI wires and replaced with a late model harness and all D series components.
She is a runner Bobby, light weight, uncomplicated, a treat to drive. |

well, mine has P/S and an A/T; full Westy not a Weekender
yes, That's it. One wire.
I'll post part of the VIN (pm me if you want the full VIN):
GH 025 811 - early ’86; manf. date 10/85 on door post
if VW shuts down in August and reopens in mid- to late Sept. like Porsche does (or did), then this must a really early '86 |

BTW, my plan is to add an "inlet" wire for a battery maintainer which is why I had stuff apart
I drilled a hole in the rear face of the battery box and was able to do it with the battery in place - but if anyone sees this and plans to do that in the future, it may well be easier to pull the battery. |
