|
|
Hi,
I’m building up a 56 box, do these boxes use a plastic daisy bushing between the box itself and the axle tube.
I have a later splitcase box (59 I think) and it has them, but they don’t fit the 56 box, they're a bit big?
thanks for your help |

I'm working on a '56 splitcase also and it doesn't have them either.
I read somewhere on the samba in which year they were introduced but I can't remember the year. _________________ My 1958 PGSG project topic |

Thanks for your replay, yeah I’ve read that they weren’t originally fitted but could be retrofitted.
I don’t think there are different sizes of them?
Have you refitted yours without them? |

Thanks for the link mate.
The plastic daisy that fits my 59 split case doesn’t fit the 56,
So the question is, is there different sizes, or do these early trans not use them and we should just shim them out with the paper gaskets? |

This is where I'm at now
This evening I'll check out the condition of the bearings and continue the dismantling.
First time I opened up a gearbox, so I'm still learning _________________ My 1958 PGSG project topic |

I don't know how good your German language is, but I've found this site once:
http://www.dj-viela.de/dj-viela_kaefer-b-log/dj-vi...chron.html
In the text under the picture of the plastic daisy, the guy says about later type splitcase gearboxes with the plastic daisy (oct'58 and up?) "Die Kalotten des Gehäuses sind zu diesem Zweck um 1 mm tiefer gesenkt" which means something like "The domes of the (gearbox) housing are 1 mm lower for this purpose"
So I guess if you want to use the domes on an early splitcase, you have to shim the axle tubes 1 mm (on top of the normal shimming). _________________ My 1958 PGSG project topic |

same as that
I'm buttoned up again now and ready to put the tubes back on.
Just spoke to Cogbox here in the UK.
says that some did and some didn't use them, he would of thought that a 56 would but as the daisy of the 59 didn't fit, I shouldn't need to run them.
so, no bush, just pack them out with paper gaskets |

I don't recall any of the split case boxes using the plastic flower. _________________ Independent German Auto

No the early boxes don't use them. As you say you just shim the tubes with the gaskets. Just did our 57 split case box and no plastic daisy's |

Did you guys have to replace a lot of internal parts?
I'm trying to source parts now, but it's not easy. You got some tips you could share _________________ My 1958 PGSG project topic |

Samba ads.
Nothing is repro'd for split case gearboxes, so it's either good used or NOS. _________________

I was lucky my box had reportedly only done 25k and when I opened it I believed him.
It was mint, so just had to button it back up. |

Thanks Bruce, I have noticed the samba classifieds is a great place to source for parts. Maybe in the future companies will start reproducing parts. I think there is some market potential in that.

Damn you're lucky
My bearings and the first gear teeth are pretty worn on mine. _________________ My 1958 PGSG project topic |
