What is the threaded hole stamped with an "O" on a GR15N generator?
Thanks. |

Only threaded hole on the 12v generator I can think of is the one near the fan housing for the ground wire that runs to the regulator, don't recall it having an O stamp though. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Does it need that ground wire if the regulator is isolated from the chassis ground? and does it go to one of the terminals on the regulator or just the mounting bracket? |

It's best to connect the regulator and generator together with the ground wire to ensure they work correctly, but so long as you have a good chassis ground for each component then they should work.

Thank you for that info and pics. It started like a charm. Although I think my generator is shot. When I first got the vehicle last fall, I noticed a waxy type of material coming out of the generator. After finding out that the regulator was not wired correctly and had signs of circuit damage, I figured that the generator might have been overheated and that the waxy type of material that dripped out indeed was a sign of a generator that has gone bad. |

If you have a volt meter, you can do a checkout of the generator to answer any question you have about whether it's working or not. As for the waxy substance, do you have a pic you could post up? _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Where do I measure and what voltages should I be getting? I have just measured at the battery while it was running and with the throttle on a little bit, and it is reading 12.3 volts.
Here are some pics of the waxy substance that I took last year when I noticed it.

Here's a link to the voltage test: http://www.vw-resource.com/generator.html#voltage
As for the waxy substance... looks like wax to me. I've never had a new generator, always ended up refreshing the one I had installed, so my best theory is the wax was put there by the factory or rebuilder to prevent corrosion while it sat on the shelf. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

I guess my generator is bad. I did polarize the generator, since it sat for over 6 months and it did spin nicely. I thought I was good to go. I checked across the battery and it only read a little over 12 volts. I disconnected the wires from the generator and measured only 1 to 2 volts while running. It's a new generator (from the previous owner), so I'm not even looking at the brushes being worn out. I just believe that the previous owner had things wired up incorrectly which damaged the generator. I have another one on its way to me, so I know what I will be doing this weekend. Thanks again for the information. |
