I recently picked up a 1970 Campmobile, after a surprisingly short search. My wife and I decided that instead of trying to find a trailer to tow around and camp in, that a Westy would fit the bill much better and be more fun (hopefully). I was given the heads up about this '70, which was about 2.5 hours away from me. Once I was sent pictures and told that asking price, I pretty much knew I would be buying it. To find a rust free Campmobile, or any rust free ACVW in this province is very tough. There have been some alterations made, which include adding a '74-'74 Deluxe Westy stove/electric fridge cabinet, and moving the matching sink cabinet over to where the jump seat was. They also changed the fold out table. The jump seat is now deleted.
It has a rebuilt 1776 with dual Kadrons. When I went to see it, my brother and the owner urged me to just "...drive it home." I refused as it has been sitting for a while and I didn't just want to turn the key and drive home that distance without changing fuel lines and such first. I smelled gas in the engine compartment so thought I had a leaky line somewhere. My brother stated "All VW's smell like gas, it's no big deal." Well, after getting it home and off the trailer, I'm glad I didn't try to drive it. I checked the oil and it stinks of gas and it's pretty thin. So, off to get a fuel pump to replace the leaking one.
It was being sold as it wasn't being used. As the owner told me, his wife had the romantic notion that it would be fun to camp in, until they did so in southern B.C., which can get very hot. I guess the romance went away with no A/C. I was also told that it scared her a bit to drive as it was "wobbly" in wind or on corners. Well, I looked at the tires (new) and they are passenger car tires, not light truck. Luckily I have a set of tires for the Westy, ready to be installed.
On to the pictures.

Is that a chip in the windshield near the top above the steering wheel? If so, did you take that into account when negotiating? |

As it's winter and I don't have a garage to work on the Bay, everything has pretty much stopped for now. I have picked up a Bosch mechanical advance distributor (rebuilt) to replace the cheap 009. That should play better with the dual Kads.
I also picked up a small cargo trailer for it last summer. It already has a hitch and a spot for trailer lights so I thought what better than to take along a small trailer to transport all the things we don't want riding around inside? It will be great for the BBQ, propane tank, generator if we want to bring one, camping supplies and tables and an extra stove plus assorted odds and ends.
Also, some newer interior pictures.
