Soon as the guy gets back to me we are going to try and go look at this. Are there any pointers as far as looking at it that we need to consider? Everything seems to be correct as far as lights and dash switch. I tried to look up detail about the small stuff just worried about anything else that it not normal from a standard 181. The guys says it runs but needs some work.
Thanks for any help. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

It is a genuine military 181, probably Bundeswehr.
Camo paint work is not original. _________________ Thing stuff:

I'm surpised that it still has the shielded ignition system. Good fine so far. Is this a swing axle or IRS? What's the year (by VIN). _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

Very nice find. That wheel chock in the engine compartment is also nice to see. |

I am just curious I have not seen one of these on the samba how much does an average military thing go for? |
My very rough estimate is they carry a 10-40% premium attached based on condition.
I have only ever seen one in person once, and it wasn't for sale. (I have actually seen more genuine Kubels.) That means my guesstimate is based on eBay ads mostly where I have to take the pics and description into consideration and under scrutiny.
I like using eBay even though it is imperfect because other source ads won't let you know if it was actually sold and what the actual selling price ended up being. Besides, as imperfect as eBay is, comparing eBay to eBay should still be somewhat of a good barometer when dealing with percentages.
Military 181s are very cool indeed. I never saw one available when Things were on my wish list. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

The shovels are out there, I have one. You might try a ad here in the classifieds. |

I am pretty sure this is going on the ground. I did tell him to save every thing and put it aside if he decided to go that way. I am more of a resto custom guy. Super stock detail with all the fixens and on the ground. My current project is not one of those. Will have to see what he ends up doing. Its a blast to drive as is. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Regarding your price question...There was a nicely redone 1972 Bundeswehr 181 for sale on the Las Vegas Craigs List within the last year for about $9K USD. |

I did get the first 3 numbers 183. I was trying to find a vin decoder but have not had luck on finding one like the have for the bugs 😎 |
183 would indicate a 1973 model. 1973 US model would not have Swing axles and redux gears. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |
