$100 BBQ Saturday at noon with 5 friends to strip your VW can SAVE up to
$3000 or more or instead paying the paint shop for $75 an hour guy X what ever hours would take him _________________ 68 T34 1600 Automatic

Is that TJ, as in Tijuana?
If so, do you know what their hourly labor rate is versus the US rate? |

Me neither.
I know about 15 years ago, it cost me about 3K to paint my Notch. My T-34 cost closer to 6K, and that's with me doing all of the prep work. But I do have to agree with Tram, it seems like every time I turn around the price of paint and supplies has gone up again.
Oh, and my son paid 178 a pint (for just the paint), so we could paint of the rust repairs we did on his Honda civic. Turns out that color has multiple pearls in it, which was part of the reason for the high cost. He still had to buy the reducer (50 bucks for a quart), along with some clear (300 per gallon), and reducer for the clear (75 per qt), plus the epoxy primer used to seal the rust repair work (150 for 1qt of primer and 1qt activator). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

External only paint, minor sanding and even less bondo, 1/2-off any Macco package so I think I paid $150 for a $300 job. Still looks fine compared to the 1/2-primer 1/2-OEM paint she originally was (I had the trim removed and holes welded up when I was in the Navy). Of course, there's a reason why I still have that bra on the nose as there was a piss-poor cleaning job on it and the paint didn't adhere -- looks like oil droplets were on the nose when they applied the paint.
That was over 14 years ago and the paint is still holding up. The owner and the rest of the car, not so much
Yes, you get what you pay for. I wouldn't be complaining about those prices. _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

I feel like an infidel saying it but the Maaco paint job I had done back in 1997 for my 1973 Fasty looked great, held up very well and ran me something like $300 at the time...it was a polyurethane finish, no clear coat, but the guy had a pretty good surface thickness all around and didn't skimp on paint. That was me doing all the prep and taping, and didn't include anything but the spray.
I just had the Fasty painted again but this time the guy did all the sanding and prep, primed and painted and then installed new windows and window seals for me...ran me something like $2400. Am I IN LOVE with the work - no, but it'll be a driver and I definitely don't want to be super worried about it while I'm parked. I don't have a garage and my VWs definitely see the weather. The job is acceptable, was work I couldn't do myself and he did the extra tasks...nice guy, too, so I'm not complaining.
After 9 years on blocks on my driveway (after being t-boned in '06 and then finding more rear end rust than I thought was there) my neighbors are amazed to see it nearing completion. While the engine (only 50K original miles on it) was out I replaced the manifold boots (and all the other hoses) and it now runs better than it ever has.
Maybe I'll actually make it to an Invasion one of these days!

You guys are making me sad. I was thinking I would do all the prep myself and maybe pay a shop to do the paint but. With those prices, I'm going to have to learn to paint the Notch myself.
Oh well. I like a challenge.

Oh you still can, but it's not gonna be cheap, especially in California. Remember, in California all you get is water based BC/CC. At least when you were in VA, you could get solvent based paint. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I've got about $30 in my bomb-can job. I was planning to give it a real paint job, but since it's not a show car but a true DD that gets driven year around in every weather, I like the quick touch-up that bomb can provides. It's a "10-footer" and that is how it was built. I park in front with no worries. _________________ Regards,

Actually, it depends upon where you live in California.
Here, close to the ocean, where the air is cleaner(?),
You can get the 'compliant' stuff - a.k.a. '49-state' paints.
I got my single-stage here cash n carry no problem.
Some counties don't even require smog tests.
California is a big place. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Yup, just got mine painted single stage, old school, hard as nails, bad for the environment and I live in the Bay Area, California. Just have to know where to look. _________________ 1968 FI Squareback |

Hey, that's cool. I was just going off what some others (in other forums) were having to deal with.
I know water based is trying to work it's way into my area, as that seems to be the way the EPA wants it. I know NY state is getting more like California in what you can and can't get as far as paint supplies go. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
