Hi Guys,
Im new to VW and have a question regarding the model I have.
Its a 196# with 1300 engine, seems like it is all stock.
My question is as follows, was it ever released/built with a 1300 option.
See images of my bug, any info and help would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Other than the smaller license light housing, it looks like a 65 or 66 to me. Big windows, wing window post slanted instead of straight, later button decklid lock instead of T-handle. Later style wipers park to the left, Upholstery looks like a 65, but has center dash vent like a 66. Hard to tell from the picture, but I don't see the 66 style seat release. Can't see if there's an emergency flasher... Looks like a 65 oil bath too. |

1300 badge would mean a 66. I mean, if it hasn't been bothered since it left the factory... |

Gotta love the right hand drive. Most indications are 1966. Honestly who knows with VW. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.
Numbers Matching VW's are getting harder to find. Source out the most Stock vehicle and keep that way. You will be glad you did.

There a few hints in Simon Glen's, Volkswagens of the World*
-From 1956 to 1965 had a controlling share of the Beetle assembly line at Uitenhage SA, which gradually went from CKD kit assembly to full local manufacturing facility's with finally only the aluminum for the engine castings being imported.
-Despite always having relatively low yearly sales and production figures, VW SA went full ahead with updating their tooling in '65 with the all new body pressing for the larger windows.
-in 1966, the parent company (VW) took full interest of Volkswagen SA.
-With the exception of retaining the pre-'65 brakes, chassis and link pin front ends up until final production in 1979, SA Beetle's in most respects kept up with current German model features shortly after they were introduced.
Given all these clues, and the fact that the 1300 was introduced practically Worldwide in 1966, good chance a 1300 engine is original or at least an option on a SA built car.
Very nice car it is by the way! Sort of a rare SA time capsule if i do say so.
With productions figures of only around 30,000 cars per year in this period, it's cars like this no one ever see's, not even in SA I'd bet!
Please document as much of it features and idiosyncrasy's with as many photos as you can bare. Very cool tail light lens, and the upholstery appears original and is very unique.
A true historical archive in itself I'd say
