Hey there!
When I was 15, my first car was nearly a VW Super Beetle. 21-years later, I finally buy my first VW Beetle - The dream finally coming to fruition!
I bought this 1963 VW Beetle on eBay in November of 2014. It was located just east of Los Angeles so I shipped it to OldSpeed to personalize it a bit.
They just finished the suspension and I'm now looking toward the engine!
At Time of Purchase...

Good question!
All I have ever done is watch pictures go through The Samba and all sorts of Beetle threads in Facebook - drooling over different options. Not knowing much about the motors - I'm really not sure!
I'm supposed to chat with Russ at Oldspeed next week about options! Would love to hear ideas, experience, suggestions. |

So the car is technically ready to get on the truck and head to the East Coast. My thoughts were to upgrade the engine but since it's numbers matching engine/trans I'm thinking it may be best to bring it home and rock the 40-horses for a bit and then try to find the right installer locally. I really really wanted Old Speed to do the work because I heard so many great things. Getting the stock stuff home though concerns me a bit. Curious what you guys think??? This is my first Beetle and I love it to death. I don't want to make wrong moves. |

If it's numbers-matching I personally would stick with the original engine unless it's tired.
But I'm more of a bone stock guy.
I haven't driven a 40hp engine in a Bug very extensively but I have driven a 1500cc engine. I thought that was fine on speed and acceleration for cruising around town. A lot of people like a stock 1600.
I think MonkeyNut VW is local to you? They could do any install work of something new later. _________________ How to Post Photos

Great looking bug for sure.. Nice choice with the wheels and brakes.. If you want to go with a big motor that's fine, but I would take the stock trans and motor and put em on a pallet and wrap em up and shelf them for later.. Don't get rid of em that's for sure.. As far as size goes I really like the 2054cc.. That's 78x90.5 pretty much a 1776 with a stroker crank.. Put some 40 or 44mm IDFs on it and she will be a runner for sure but still be daily drive able and reliable and have plenty of tourq! I recently had that motors baby brother, a 1904cc it is 74x90.5 just a hair smaller on the storoke and I loved it.. I had it undercarbed for sure with just a set of baby webers on it but it was still a lot of fun.. Toss a mild cam in it and some 40x35 heads and itl be fun.. Mine had a 110 and the 40x35 heads.. As far as trans you couldn't go wrong with a pro street from any of the known vendors.. Will hold plenty of power and won't break the bank.. And Everett is right monkeynut will help you with anything you need! Good luck with it and nice car! |
