I'm new to this and VW sand rails in general. I just bought a rail that needs a transmission. I've been looking at the Scat pro sand swing axel transmission and want to know if it is worth the $1500. If it's not or there are better deals out there I would greatly appreciate knowing where to look. One other question is what gear ratios for third and fourth work best or have you liked most?

If your building just a little cruiser you can getaway with a stock type 1 (bug) or type 2 (bus) which is geared lower for more torque. Without knowing what you have its hard to say if you should spend 1500 on a buggy that may be with a third of that.

The engine is a 2183. Tires are 13.00x15. It has two seats. Dual EMPI 44 carbs. Terrain would be sand dunes and trail riding through mountains. Wanting to be able to climb some pretty steep hills.

There is sand in Wyoming but Idaho dunes are closer.
