Could i be having this problem if the carb is to small for the engine. We have not checked what size the engine is yet the guy who bought the carb thought it was a 1600 so he bought a carb for it for a 1600 .Now all i have to do is find the size of the engine .A friend compared his manx with an 1835 to mine and the case bolts on mine are 5/8 same as his and with a 1600 the case bolts are 9/16 does that change anything?

I wish I could help but I'm not mechanically inclined. If you don't get an answer here, post your question under the year VW that you have.

there is no way of KNOWING what size the motor is unless you pull a head. Gotta know Bore and Stroke.

You check the manifold boots for cracks? Sounds like a vacuum leak to me.

No cracks in the manifold but the rubber covers that go over the manifold and clamp down are worn out.

Wrap them the best you can (by them I mean the rubber boots) in tape or plastic or some thing to seal the boots and see how she runs. You just want to eliminate possibilitys of a vacuum leak one by one.

I also found that the gas line was pinched and the valve was not all the way open. I will wrap them as best i can i have E6000 industrial rubberized glue i can fill in any cracks 6000 psi of pressure to break

A pinched fuel line definitely does not help.

I hate thoughs times when it could be a multitude of things like in this case im not sure how good the fuel filter is the fuel line was pinched the valve was not open vacuum could be off.Now i have to re set the damn valve lash on this and i have no clue because im used to go kart engines not car motors my go kart engines only have two valves that are not connected. Can anyone tell me what i should be doing im on the left side of the engine what is valve one vale two valve three and 4 is it the valve closest to the driver being number 1 ? Should i be at TDC when i set valves one and 2 or BDC .I read someone mentioned model of the engine this engine is a UO model
