What is the rear most threaded hole in engine tin for? This would be the hole directly in front of the crankshaft pulley.

To cover the crank pulley. probably intended to keep stuff away from the pulley. most were left off to make changing the belt easier.

I don't think I have ever seen that piece before. Is it a necessary piece? The threaded hole with nothing in it just bugs me.
