Hi all, I am wondering if there is a difference between 55-67 and 49-55 frame rails (i.e. shape or other characteristics)? My friend has a pair of rails that I might use to build a franken- barndoor out of cut parts.
Thanks, James

Front half rails are way different. No way to use late to modify into barndoor. The rear half could be modified or even better if they are wolfsburg built. But you still would need the end castings of the torsion bar housing.

I think Gerson must be really busy right now. I've been having trouble hearing back from him too. After 3 weeks I finally did. What are you planning on building?

I am either trying to find a barndoor that needs work (making it moderately affordable) or a bullet split window. I have had one person contact me, and the bus is a south american pile... ill p/m you and elaborate... I think I'm going to resort to building one

Take a look in the today in bus hunting thread. A guy just found a heavily butchered barny and you can see the front frame rails. Maybe see if he wants to sale.

Is there a difference in the way barndoor beams mount? Are they similar to beetle beams?

You shouldn't waste your time trying to build the barndoor out of nothing but this is what it looks like on how the front beam mounts

If you want to buy, build or make a BD you will have to get much deeper into it and read through lots of topics on this forum. Most all the information is here. Barndoors are very different from later buses except for the 56/7 Wolfsburg buses there nearly isn't a single thing the same !
Building, making, owning and driving Barndoors is very much a labor of love and affection. you got to learn to know every single part.

Ive been talking to the owner of the 53 shorty for sale.
I think it could be an "affordable" way for me to get into it without faking a barndoor. It doesn't have a chassis #, but has the body stamp and I contacted Stiffung to find out if there is a way to cross reference the chassis number. It seems like all of the hard to find stuff is there. Has anyone ever seen a MPH barndoor speedo like the one shown? Thanks for helping me out, Im sure Ive been a pain in the ass but its better to ask than assume. Laughing

Im quickly seeing this as I try to find simple things like wiring diagrams, lights and gas tanks. Shocked

Is there a way to get a chassis number besides the two standard areas. I know that I have a body number, but the areas that would have a chassis number are gone. Is there one on the torsion housing or frame?
James

No but if I remember right, some Buses have the last few digits of the VIN # on the seat brackets up front or the front window frames.

Front window frames may be much earlier than 1953.

On the shorty truck? That is a normal MPH speedo for a '53.

Yeah, on the truck. On Barndoor.dk, it only shows kph speedos, but that might be because Tonny is not from the land of strange measurements.

Unfortunately I must have been remembering this incorrectly as my '55 does not match my VIN #.
My '55 seat stand area says 206 but my VIN # does not end in 206:
