An rpm gauge is a tachometer. You will have separate power feeds from positive and instrument cluster lights, and a negative for ground. For the feed wire from the coil negative terminal #1, you'll need to run a wire from front of VW to the engine compartment.

What Cusser said about the Tach. Most aftermarket gauges will tell you what to hook up to which wire on the gauge but you have to be electrically literate enough to do the car end yourself...too many variations for the tach-maker to list them all.

For an aftermarket speedometer, that's trickier, you'll have to fit some sort of sensor to get wheel RPM in addition to just running wiring to existing components.
