Agreed on both counts.
I generally skip threads with ambiguous titles like that in the tech forums.

I just did a search and brought up this old thread.
I remember seeing it 5 years ago, and at the time I didn't post, but my thought was against it as well. However, with 5 more years gone by, and a couple of the other (non-VW) forums I look at using this feature, I have gotten more and more used to it. It's to the point where I often find myself hovering over thread titles here on theSamba, expecting a popup preview - especially on topics where the thread title isn't very clear.
So what do people think in 2015 about this feature?

I think it's an excellent feature for any forum to have, as long as it's implemented correctly. There are some sites on which it is awkward and difficult
to AVOID the preview tooltips, because, for instance, they come up when traversing the entire "box" the title is located in, instead of just the title itself.
Those sites are justifiably regarded as "annoying". There should somewhat of a delay before the tooltip shows. The tootip should be large enough to suit
it's purpose, which is to give some idea of what the thread is about. Limiting it to one line would defeat that purpose. The tooltip should not "expire" until
the user moves the cursor away. Etc.
