Also, I've had much better luck with craigslist when looking for cars.
Ten years ago I bought a '94 Ranger ext cab with 67k miles off craigslist for $2500. Ads on autotrader, cars.com etc all wanted 5 - 6k for the exact same truck.

Agreed. When I was looking for a car for the wife, I spent a few days on Craig's list searching for just the "right" car. The guy we eventually bought from had a phone number to contact him, and I did. we set up a time, took it for a ride and bought it. Simple.
When I bought my lawn tractor off Craig's list, the guy didn't have a phone number listed, so I e-mailed him. He gave me his number, and we hooked up on what had to be the coldest day of the year. Bought the tractor though.
In both cases, I was the buyer, and found what I wanted. My buddy has bought and sold a bunch of stuff off of Craig's list with no issues.

You do meet some interesting people on Craig's list. Wink

jsptown,

I have just the ITEM you are looking. Be it your home area is. Please to give me your personal info and SoCal secure number with 5000USD, my cousin's wife's brother brings title from his uncle to you after we recieve funds, will then tell you where to pick up your ITEM.

Its both a blessing and a curse that there are alternatives to Car Trader and our local want ads.

Its not just car sales, you'd be surprised sometimes how hard you have to work to spend money with vendor companies.

I had an issue using the email feature to respond to items on the classified ads. I had a guy email me back GO F_ _ K yourself SCAMMER.

If you put key words like I can pay by paypal or use the term Western Union in your email then gmail will automatically flag it as spam. I couldn't figure out why nobody would respond to me.

After learning this I have since had great luck buying off the classified by just being short and saying I want the item please contact me back.

Amen to that!

I listed my son's car on CL and got about 40 replies the first day. I included in the add "give a phone number and I'll contact you". Not even half would do that so I never responded to them. I will never put my number in a CL add.

As a buyer, it's like pulling teeth sometimes to get details out of a seller. A guy will post some item that I'm interested in, so I'll e-mail back with a few short questions about stuff that I can't make out in the one blurry photo he included.
Usually, I'll be lucky to get a one-word answer to only one of my questions. What's up with that...does the guy want to sell the thing or not? Are people's lives so hectic that they can't spare a few minutes to answer questions about something that they're trying to sell, and that'll maybe bring them a hundred bucks or more?

Some are not capable of selling parts without some effort on their part. They just want to post a fuzzy pic (if even that) and you send them funds done deal.
I tried to buy a starter once that maybe looked like an auto stick starter but couldn't tell for sure so I e mailed the seller for a better pic or if it was in fact an AS starter? I was promptly called a time suck, a never ending waste of time PITA and so on. Really? What a douche.

I totally understand not wanting to put your phone # out there, especially with time-wasting texters these days.

Sort of off the topic but I was just talking to a guy on craigslist who said he doesn't do this because "People will look up all my ads and flag them all to remove their competition".

I tried to explain to him that's not how it works - ads don't get removed from a single report - but he didn't believe me.

I also told him I like it when someone has a phone # in their ad because I can find their other ads to see if they have a bunch of stuff I want, especially since he was 30 minutes away from me.

He was also one of those people who said
"I have tons of stuff, what else do you need?"
"What else do have?"
"Well, what are you looking for?"
Bitch I just told you I tried to look up your other ads to buy more stuff, tell me what else you have or GTFO.

Unfortunately Western Union is a big scam flag, even though it is very common to use in Central/South America

Paypal should not be a flag to anyone unless they are crazy.

Some sellers and buyers are crazy though!
