So I just picked up a 53 Zwitter and have been sorting through the parts. The car is a failed project. Previous owner took it all apart and thats about it. Most of the hardware was thrown away, I guess for a stainless kit. Now I have to hunt down all the correct bolts. But at least it is a solid car. Looks like I got all the hard to find Zwitter only parts: split arrow speedo, no handle no chrome ashtray, push button start switch, hearts, flat handle wing vents, under dash light switch, dome lamp, correct hood and aluminum handle. etc. But there are a few parts Im not sure about.
Is this the correct air cleaner, never seen one with a wing nut.
Is this the correct shifter? It has the smaller ball. Car is in storage so I cant check if the rod in the matching number pan accepts the small ball.
Is this the correct steering column wire cover:
Finally, what is this mystery part:
Thanks for any help. |

They are used from 1953-55 on Beetles. Early Pre '59 Buses used them as well. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

Thanks everyone for your replies, really appreciated. I found the air cleaner in the FAQ post, seems like its a really hard to find zwitter part so happy about that.
The shifter is really strange because the previous owner said the car was never apart prior to him and its original to the car. The car is an early Jan car. I dont know a reason why it would have been changed to split shifter if it ever was.
Wire cover, I wasnt sure because someone told me there was an early and later version. Here's a pic I grabbed from the classifieds that shows one with a shorter flat tab.
And Mika, you got the mystery part right. I should have put a coin next to it in the picture for size reference but you're right it fits the mirror bracket. It was also in a baggie with door handles and the rubber tri-angle piece for the mirror bracket. I got a question about the bracket. Were there two versions? Mine is a thin stamped alluminum part, guess thats why it needs the mystery part for support. The other ones i usually see are thick cast.
Heres a pic of my stamped mirror bracket, looks like the screws broke in the rod.
