Great work and thanks for sharing it. I'll be watching this since I have a double cab roof skin to do in the near future. |

College came a semester early so I had to get the roof done just enough so that it would hold the body together and stay on. Its not very "pretty" right now but it shows you how to get the roof back on. All that has to be done still lots of body work.
I started VW's for the first time 4 years ago with ZERO experience. I was 15 at the time, now I'm 19 and I've replaced a roof on a beetle. If I can do it, ANYONE can.
Next time you look at a crumpled roof on a bug, look at it as an opportunity!

I don't know how I missed this thread! I have always cringed/been fascinated thinking about the work involved on replacing a beetle roof. Your step by step is awesome. Thank you for posting it, and I will definitely stay tuned for the finish. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

Thank you for the compliments! You'll have to wait till summer time for any more updates though. It'll be finished sometime! _________________ Multi-year baja project that seems to never end

Very interesting project that will be a good source of information for future people looking at performing a roof repair.
Something that would have helped this project would have been a familiarization with the Samba's Technical section link with an emphasis on the Tools section, Local Manufacture of Tools. In that book, VW lays out special tools dealers could construct to carry out various body repair operations. The ones that would have been perfect for this project VW 734 (Rain Drop Mould Deflanging Tool), VW 744 (Window Frame Forming Tool), VW Tool 745 (Window Frame Forming Tool - Straight), and VW Tool 746 (Forming Tool for Ribs and Folded Edges). There are instructions in one of the sections for building window jigs when replacing the roof or cowl on a vehicle.
The Tools section is probably one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated sections of The Samba. I think Everett should make a sticky in this forum to direct people to that section as it would be a great benefit to people, such as the OP, who have to make their own tools. It will save them from having to reinvent the wheel and enable them to finish projects quicker.
Overall, the OP did a great job considering his limited experience with this kind of repair. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |
