Can somebody please give me some advice on a particular alarm to have installed in my 1956 Type I...? Is there an alarm on the market that works better then others with vintage Volkswagen's? |

Don't think one can find a 6volt alarm. On my '56 oval, I use a master electrical cut off switch and turn my gas reserved lever to where the gas is turn off to the fuel pump. Also one can purchase a wheel boot. If they want to steal your car this stuff only slows them down. Make shur the engine lid is locked. You can also add a keyed Master lock to the ratchet beneath the e-brake so that it locks up the rear wheels, if you don't mind putting a hole through the rubber boot. Will also want to add additional nuts to the e-brake cables to act as lock nuts so the Master lock can't be easily defeated.
It is true, however, that if someone really wants your car, they'll get it.
You're simply relying on the laziness factor of a thief that does not want to work in using the various techniques to make the thief actually work on stealing your car...
Best,

if the car is 12v there are a few things you can do alarm wise
#1 buy brand name. Viper, Code Alarm, Clifford, Etc. If you havent heard the name before, skip over it. Also, the newer 2 way alarms are nice, your alarm remote will go off when someone trips the alarm
#2 add sensors that do not come with the alarm such as:
2 stage Proximity sensor. Beeps when someone (or a cat) gets near the car, trips the full alarm if someone sticks their hand in it
Digital Tilt sensor - sets the alarm off if someone tries to jack the car up or tow it off. There used to be ball bearing sensors and murcury switches but those never really worked. The digital tilt sensor is much better and actually works
Glass Break sensor - thieves use a small glass break punch to break glass instead of beating it with a tire iron. A glass break sensor detects the distinct sound of glass cracking
there are all kinds of other sensors - a good alarm will come with a dual stage shock sensor as well as a starter kill
last bit of advice if you go this route - find a good alarm shop with good installers that have been doing alarms a long time. Do not go to best buy or audio express or Fry's or any big chains. Those guys are all fresh out of school and do rush jobs. A good alarm installer will get everything right the first time. My guy is in his 50's and has been doing alarm installs for 30 years - he's a little more expensive than best buy or any big box store, but his work is way better, everything is hidden and I couldn't be happier _________________ Stop dead photo links! ... one of my '54s once came with an alarm and I have seen very few of them in thesamba classifieds. And yes, it was 6v... was electric and there was a softball size metal sphere bell, with a metal hammer inside... mounted under the front trunk, behind the gas tank. I believe it was a genuine VW accessory.
I have never had anything stolen from me in my life. So, I don't even think along those lines and removed that alarm. I may still have it somewhere. i'll look for it... could have pitched it too. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

Sounds like one alarm VWOA sold. Got to see an NOS unit a few years ago. If you have no plans for it.... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

There are also a wide range of GPS trackers on the market that send a SMS to your phone when your car has been moved. In terms of usefulness in retrieving your car a mate in the police force tells me they are fairly unreliable as the technology is not there to pinpoint the car exactly but gives you a general area. But at least you know your car has been moved and can report it early. In terms of car alarms I don't know anyone who acts on hearing a alarm anymore!
Usually the people who steal classic cars aren't kids doing it for fun and your chances of recovery are low, they'll just tow it if they want it. My mates advice was keep it in a locked garage (preferably parked in by another car), park in areas with security cameras rather than on the street in the city and have good insurance policy on it cause there are no guarantees! _________________ 1960 Beetle ''Heidi" daily driver
