Condenser on generator

Anyone know why there would be a condenser on the generator? Is it needed or can it be removed?

It is for suppression of radio interference. Haven't seen one like that, it looks a little awkward.

could I use the same type of condenser/capacitor that is on the distributor for this application or would I need a radio capacitor?
