if I lived nearby, I'd be hitting that this weekend, just to browse - hunt parts for my car, and any friends...

love SC - miss it! (lived there 9 years, but did not own a VW at the time....good to see they had resources...)

A full complete Bug with engine will only bring $130-$160 across the scales at the crushers. If he is starting at $500 he is not interested in selling off his junk.

$20 just to look? The picture looks quite enticing, but I'm not sure any of those bugs in the wild are worth $500.

Yes, the ad says:
Quote:
There will be a $20.00 per person "just looking fee". If you buy something then the $20.00 will be taken off the price of the car or any parts

My first guess would be this is kind of place where you pay $20, find a bunch of stuff, and find out everything that should be $10 is $100 so you just get pissed and walk away $20 poorer.

at this point in the game, someone has had to have dealt with/tried to deal with the guy. there has to be a story just waiting to be told...

I regret to say this could easily be incorrect.

Four years, that's one slow-moving crusher.

At $20, it only takes a few victims per week to keep a body in Winstons and PBR.

Don't waste the trip the crusher may not have done any damage yet but the rust has. There is nothing left but part cars. Very difficult to deal with gets offended when you make a fair offer based on condition. Always seemed like he was irritated when you went there. Yes I have known him for a long time.

I bought a 69 Ghia project from him just over three years ago. Was a decent car at a decent price. Back then he had a good number of cars in various conditions including around twenty something Ghias, many many Beetles, and maybe half a dozen oval shells (mostly parts cars). No idea about his current inventory.
The story I got about the $20 when looking at his cars was that he was tired of having to go behind people shutting doors, decklids, etc. on his cars. He seemed a nice guy.
