Hi all
Whenever I drive my '56 deluxe the clutch operates exactly as it should for the first 5 miles or so but then it seems as if the clutch is not fully operating since it slightly grinds when changing gear - but only when the car is well warm - cold it's perfect ?... anyone have an idea what look for please ? |

Or possibly the gland nut bearing needs greased ? _________________ Rick

Unfortunately the motor needs to be pulled to check the gland nut torque. Could be a bad throw-out bearing too.

If needle bearings in the gland nut have been destroyed or need a tiny bit of grease to lube them up. Gaze into the gland nut to see. Too much grease in the needle bearings can lube up the clutch disc and cause slipping... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

The folks talking about the pilot/gland bearing are on the right path, I think. Here's why:
When the transaxle is cold, the oil is extremely thick. So when you push the clutch in, the viscosity of the oil slows and stops the input shaft. This allows the sldiers to change gears without the synchros needing to mitigate shaft speeds. As the oil thins out, the input shaft spins more easily. Now if the pilot bearing is bad and not allowing the input shaft to spin nicely, the thin oil won't grab it to slow it down like thick oil would, and your synchros are not able to work hard enough to overcome the input shaft speed (which is at engine speed.) Thus- grindage when the transaxleoil is warm.
