Attempting to change the destroyed CV axel on a jetta GL
what tools do I need to back the CV off
torque bits don't seem to be the right ones. They won't fit and bolts are starting to strip a tad bit. |

8mm triplesquare bit. Be sure to use something like a paperclip to clean all the dirt out to allow the bit all the way in to get a good bite and prevent stripping. |

KD tools calls it an 8mm serrated socket. I've had good luck using a chisel to get stripped out ones turning. Once they start turning, they usually come out quite easily. _________________ 1985 Diesel Jetta Coupe (temporarily retired at

Hello and WELCOME.
VW used two different styles of bolts for the CV's. You probably have the 8mm 12pt bit, but as old as these cars can be a 6mm allen from the air-cooled cars could have been used. You will also need to break loose the outer axle nut, while the car is on the ground, if doing it by hand. Once the nut is broken loose a bit raise the car and support it. Remove wheel if you want. On some models it is difficult to manipulate the inboard cv around to the point of pulling the entire axle inward to clear the splines. An easy fix here is to disconnect the lower ball joint, pry the lower control A arm down and disengage the ball joint from the strut. Now you are able to turn the steering wheel to inward and swing the strut/bearing housing outward allowing the axle to easily slide out of the splines on the bearing hub. I hope this makes sense. One thing to remember is to never let the wheel touch ground and have weight on it without the outer cv joint installed and somewhat torqued. The sealed bearing can easily be destroyed. |
