More beers under a bus....
We got up early this morning, drove up and over to reno to get the last of our DMV stuff done before our move finishes up. Nice little drive, ran great.
Spent the typical 3 hours waiting in the DMV and finally got our new plates.
Could have been worse... This guy pulled up next to us and immediately started steaming and puking coolant.... Air cooled has its benefits every once in a while...
Drove back to our place to finish the packing and as we got home, started hearing quite a loud VW exhaust note. The old rusty exhaust finally gave... Oh well. Enjoy a beer as i found one of the holes in/at the box.
But cheers to new plates and a new location! So long, crazyfornia!

So I went over to my cousins to pick up the 74 Westfalia motor thats been stored there - brother offers me a beer. My cousin is not a beer drinker at all. does not like the taste. So he gives me one of these Oculto beers. Wow, tastes like candy beer to me So I have three
Motor made it home and the bus got a new tattoo.

Here here, boys and girls.
Today is a heavy day for my old buddies.
Here is to my old friend, bob, who somehow survived the bataan death march.
And to Joe who survived D-Day.
May you both truly rest in peace now.

Cheers to that.
Here is to a couple of old vets I had the chance to meet. I met them both while doing what I do for a living.
Charles who was a survivor of the USS Indianapolis. I spent a good four hours listening to him tell stories.
And then there was this guy - John Jesse Saldaña Sr. He was pissed that his house was messed up by a water damage. The company I worked for ripped the shit out of it and did a poor job. I was sent in only knowing some old bastard was cussing out the snot noses and I needed to go in and make it right. I spent the better part of three days by myself un-fu&k*ng his home. He came around and befriended me over those couple of days telling me the story around the obituary story below. I actually didnt know till today that he had passed. Time has a way of creeping up on you since it didnt seem like that long ago. But I guess I met him back in 05 or 06. I feel a deep privilege to have met such a courageous individual that survived some horrific shit. It was the least I could of done to spend a moment in his life to make his home better in a time of need.
Quote: |
The war intervened, and Saldaña enlisted in the Army in 1942. In eight months, he got a commission, ultimately becoming a second lieutenant. He graduated seventh of 150 at Fort Benning's Infantry Officers Candidate School. He served in Company H, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division.
Wounded twice, at the Battle of Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge, Saldaña was the lone survivor of his unit in Luxembourg, where he was hit by an armor-piercing bullet. He earned a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.John Jesse Saldaña Sr.
In the oral history, Saldaña said that bullet broke “my shoulder and it penetrated between my lungs, seared both lungs, penetrated my diaphragm and 18 inches of my guts went up into my chest and it blew out my side.”
German soldiers left him for dead.
“It was so cold his blood froze, and that probably saved his life,” said Holmesly, retired editorial director of the San Antonio Express-News.
“He struck me as a singular man in many ways,” Holmesly said. “The wounds he incurred in the war would have killed 99 other people. But he got up and walked out.” |
I remember John cursing the Germans for using anti-aircraft guns to shoot at the trees they were in "those sons of bitches!". The rounds would shred the crap out of the trees, vehicles and men. One of which got him. He then admitted - "It was the least we could do to oblige them back with like and kind".
Thank you both for your service.
And lastly - thank you Dad for your service. David John Weigel 4/4/15

Bought a sampler from Phillips this weekend. Unfortunately, the mystery flavour was the hefeweizen (not a fan of wheat beer).

Notchboy:
Sounds like a cool dude! Tough sonofa-bitch too! Thanks for sharing!
Both of my Grandfathers served during WWII... neither saw serious action. Both served though.
Now, my wife's grandfather...... that's another story! He was a Marine in the South Pacific and what little he talked about involved HAND TO HAND combat!!!!! Dayum!
He served in WWII, Korea AND Vietnam!!!!!
My days in the Air Force were occupied by drinking and chasing women.... but I would have volunteered to go fight if they needed me.... HUGE respect for the warriors!
If it wasn't for those warriors before us, we wouldn't be having conversations about Classic VeeDubs on a free for all forum.

Cheers again to that brother!
Except tonight Im going out with a Vodka-Blood Orange & Grapefruit drink
Here, here to your wife's Grandfather!
My father served in Vietnam and most of his peers were old fellas from WW2. I remember the hair cuts you could set a watch to - to this day. Guys that would always be there when I was young at bbq's - smack you on the back of the head if you were horsing around to close to their drink and or ash tray.
My father told me a story once of a guy he worked with that was a Bataan Death March survivor. Refused to work with Asians - period. Different time for sure. Now you get in trouble with HR if you complain that someone is not pulling their weight _________________

One, for friends, brothers/sisters and family who have died, and One for whom might die. Thank you. Many international brothers have given to the cause. Let's not forget them. As we have a huge international community in The Samba. Some of which my family has served with. Much respect to you all. If we all treat people the way we would want to be treated. The world would be a better place.

Boy, judging from the participation and shear number of brew, you NW guys sure know how to do it right.
Good to see priorities are in order.
Perhaps someday we can sit down over a few (if this $@%# bus will cooperate for more than a week at a time...) _________________ ..."I live in my own little world. but it's ok, they know me here." -L. Myracle |

Is that a legit "go fund me" option?
We are kickin that idea around pretty good. Getting tired of the PO's band-aids, although a good learning experience.
