Hey everybody,
I've been on the forum for a few years but I've been poking around a bit lately because I got my car running. I figured I should start my own thread to organize my thoughts. I've had this 65 for about 9 years now. I had it running briefly when I first got it but it got away from me for another few years. I'm not going to let that happen again. lol I got the car from my grandmother. They bought the car new in 1965 in Cedar City, Utah to have a car that would make it to California when my mom was pregnant with me. Literally for when I was born. I've wanted this car my whole life. It's my birthright. haha!

I've had a couple guys work on it for in the last few years but I've decided it was time to man up and start doing the work myself. I work a lot so time is an issue and I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to it, but I'll muddle through. My original thoughts were to do a complete restore but I've decided to run it. Get it in good working order and run it.
The car was originally tan and they painted it orange and then to back tan again. The interior had been replaced too so none of it was really original anymore. It was also rotting out so I pulled it. The heat and sun here wrecks that stuff. I started sanding it down to get a little patina in some spots and remembered the orange color. I dig it. I own a tattoo shop and orange is my shop color so I'll paint my logo on the doors. Kind of a ratty patina shop bug.

The mechanic lowered it, replaced the brakes, clutch, and fuel lines. The fuel pump went out and I started having red light issues so I started poking around and found a hole in my intake manifold as well. The whole engine and compartment are filthy too so I've decided it best to pull the motor and get at it.

Thanks for reading. If you have and any questions, input, or advice at any time it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Al

Here's what she looked like when I started. She's pretty clean and solid. No holes in the pan and taken good care of by my gramps over the years.

I started sanding and love the orange. I dig how this looks. I'm doing a bit down the fenders as well.

Looks like I'm doing all the work from now on. Prepping to drop the motor I found the top left engine bolt is missing. I just paid to have the clutch changed. Rolling Eyes

As you probably know, that is the pre-heat for the manifold and will not effect a warning lamp. You could block it off . . . you get plenty of heat where you live!

You're right . . . nice, solid car! Cool
All the best on your project!

I didn't know that. Thanks! The heater isn't hooked up anyway. I wasn't planning on running it. Hmm?

Yea, it routes exhaust to near the manifold keep the intake from icing-up in cold weather.
Each end bolts to the muffler. You can put gaskets without holes in there to block it off . . . otherwise, if it is flowing freely, it will be leaking exhaust into the engine compartment.

Thanks. So not worth repairing or changing the manifold? It never gets that cold here. It wouldn't effect overheating of the engine? That's all I have to worry about when it's 115 degrees here. lol

Order j tubes to replace heater boxes. No air blowing through them holds heat at the heads. Cool story on car. Carry on... Cool

A little progress on my car.

Just got my generator back from being rebuilt. I decided to have the engine rebuilt too. I want to drive the car a lot. While that's out I'm cleaning up and redoing the firewall and changing these boots.

The hole in your intake manifold has nothing to do with your heater and is key to center mount carbs. Also, that part of the manifold is part of your exhaust system, with a hole, you have a major exhaust leak and fumes could find their way into the cab.

You NEED to repair this if you are staying with the stock carb/exhaust...look in the classifieds and buy another manifold, they are cheap

I got a bunch of old family photos today and found this pic of me. That's me in the white hat on the tricycle and that's my 65 under the carport. This was Anehiem, CA about 1966-67. I'm so proud to have this car today!
