What do you think about this paint for a Ghia? I think it's cool...kind of rat rodish. Flat white top, flat black body and gloss red flames. It's kind of interesting.

To me, flat black paint suggests you are trying to hide dodgy body work _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

I understand why you might say that, and I suppose that a flat paint would be able to hide some waviness or bumpiness better than a high gloss version of the same color.
I've heard from several different people with automotive painting experience, however, that flat finishes can present their own unique challenges and require more skill to apply than one may assume (especially where touch-ups are concerned).
Texture is really just another (often overlooked) aspect of the paint that can be varied to make a car stand out from the crowd.
I once saw a 60's Dodge van that was painted flat black with a gloss black patterned stripe around the beltline - very subtle, but very effective and cool.
Flat finishes were actually a trendy and expensive option offered by several different high-end automobile manufacturers a few years ago.
I recall that Mercedes and Lamborghini both had examples of flat finishes displayed at the Chicago Auto Show back then. |

I like the flat paint scheme, but not the flames ( I don't think they have ever helped a re-sale value either lol) they look so cliche. Scallops or pinstripes would look a good bit better and then you can do the whole, red stocks with hubcaps and white walls.
Maybe a gloss red dash would be cool? _________________ 1973 karmann ghia - current, not the last VW.

I actually saw a VW GTI at a car show that was painted a flat black urethane. The guy said it was pretty chip resistant and small rocks tend to not leave marks. I guess it was the same material bowling balls are made out of?
I definitely wouldn't be selling the car so resale isn't an issue. My plan is still strato silver but sine numbers don't match I was kind of leaning away from the stock restoration and maybe opening a door to a little bit of custom.
I don't know though, I still like those white walls _________________ -Jared

... that bus sorta' looks like satin black as opposed to flat. If you do go with the satin, save about 1/2 a quart for touch ups, down the road... Went to a hot rod show recently and saw some sweet mid 30s American cars with satin black... is pretty common.
The red flames are a hot rod look that some like and some don't. I like to do what pleases me. If you like the flames, go or it and in time, if you change your mind, it will be relatively easy to blend some of the satin in to hide them.
A satin Ghia with dark glass could look great. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD
