Hello everyone!
I am new to the site and to the VW buggy scene. After many years of kicking the idea around about getting a sandrail, i finally brokedown and bought one!!! I am a VW n00b so please bare with me.
Here is a breakdown of the motor
- 1915 Duel port
- 110 Engle cam
- Stroker seat crank
- Decade duel 44 carbs
- Mahle pistons. 94mm
(I hope i was able to get that all right)
I really have not had alot of time to spend with the buggy since i bought it, but during the test ride, i did notice that it did not like to shift into 3rd gear over 3500 RPM. as long as it was under it seemed to shift fine. Any thoughts on this? (I am now kinda worried that the trans might be bad)
Thanks for any help and i look forward to diving into this new hobby.

hopefully you just need to adjust the shift-rod. Do a search for the proper proceedure. Also might be a good idea to check to make sure that slave cylinder is bled good too. Could be your not getting all the pedal you should because of air in the line.

Thanks!!!! I will research that a bit, (adjusting the shift rod and slave cylinder is bled) so far I have been able to search and root cause a few problems on the buggy so far from this site. I also talked to a fellow at Apple tree that was very helpful as well.
I am in Dundee, you know, that place where Cabalas is at. |

Just about everything you're gonna need to learn how to do has been posted here at some point in time so get cozy with the search function. If only more people did it's be a ton easier to find things too.
Appletree has gotten my butt out of a sling a couple times before and I think they might even remember me sometimes as often as I order and call them. They usually don't have a problem taking some time to explain something which means a lot in my book. _________________ Brian H.

Looks like a nice rail. First off ditch all 4 of your shocks/coilovers and get some KYB's or similar. _________________ 1975 Baja Bug

Funny you mentioned that vdub, I was thinking the same thing. But that is going to be a little ways off. I was thinking for just pulling off the shocks on the front all together for now. (They are wayyyy to stiff) Or would it be better to leave the shock on and take the spring off? |

Seems to be some excess 3/8 line there. Sweet ride though! _________________ 66 Baja

I noticed the tranny strap. Is this a good idea to have?
My rail had a 1" DOM tube cross brace that rested on top of the tranny. I had to cut it to remove the tranny.

That’s actually the fuel lines BUGGUTZ, the fuel filter leads into a fuel pump, then tee's off to each carb.
I have not really had much time to play around with the buggy yet due to work but I recently received my carb sync tool and heim joints from Appletree. I know the heim joints on the carbs are bad and most likely they need to be tuned. Hopefully I can get it running good over the long weekend.
As far as the strap on the tranny goes MFE 3, it appears that the frame was designed with the strap on it??? and does anyone happen to know what frame it is???
Thanks! |

The frame is a Berrien. like your Michigan neighbor Vanapple's. Your strap over the front of the trans is not a VW or even Berrien piece. It IS a badly needed and important piece that will keep the trans from breaking due to engine torque. For a stock Bug putting around on paved streets of a city, it's not needed. Offroad it's very important. It wasn't installed quite right. It SHOULD be straight across over the case joint. But it'll work that way.
The back of the frame is weakened quite a bit by the PO having cut out the side rails by the carbs. There are better ways to do that. _________________ Richard

Thanks Dustymojave, I agree with you about the back of the frame being cut, I guess I will have to come up with something down the road to correct it. |
