Gary clearly stated the engine was shipped with a dry sump, and new oil filter. Doesn't matter if the shipper tipped it, or otherwise. There was NO OIL IN THE SUMP when he shipped it.

As far as the FI wiring harness goes, take fifteen minutes with enamel Testors Modeling Paint and color code the plugs as indicated in the Bentely. That will really help avoid plugging them in wrong.

Hello Chris, with the exploding variables exploding nicely here, I ask only that the engine be installed and assembled when I get there. Then we fool around with some stuff and then we take a victory test drive. Then we drink beer . . . from the tap.

Please:
* torque heads to 23 ft/lbs
* torque rockers to 10 ft/lbs
* then adjust valves to an easy slide .006"
* have a spare set of F.I. intake manifold gaskets.

We will be using the 205 distributor, but if the 009 allows you to get things running, just keep it for now. If the engine refuses to run properly, please wait.
Colin

Update:

I received several text messages and some pictures today from Chris, the OP. He was hot on the trail to solving this. He found the valves mid-adjusted and fixed that. He was able to start up and idle well but the engine dies out when off idle so thinking vacuum leak. It was almost 10pm there so he quit for the night. Maybe Sunday is the day he will solve this with everyone's help. If you have an idea of how to fix the off idle stall problem, please offer it up.

Cheers Samba, we did it!

After thinking about it over the week, I decided the best course of action was to drop the engine/trans so I could clean the head nuts and threads so I could sleep well at night knowing my torques were correct. I picked up a new Craftsman 10 - 75 foot pound click-type wrench to replace my beam one.

I was in the driveway at 6:45am on Saturday in hopes that we could still make use of the camping reservations that my wife made for the weekend. By a quarter to 10 my wife checked in on my progress.

I didn't tell her I was dropping the engine. Razz

After removing the rocker assemblies, cleaning the rusty threads, torquing the heads per Bentley to 23 ft lbs, resembling it all back together (including the 009) I had the engine back in the bus by about 7PM. It started but ran like crap again. Some quick texts and a call to Gary and we discovered that I had set the #3 valves closed as if they were at #1 TDC. I readjust the valves and the engine roars to life. My wife revved the engine to 3200 and I set the timing to 28 BTDC. At 7:55 we were all about ready to jump in the bus and head to the campground as the daylight was fading when the engine died the nano second I tried to rev it.

That night as I laid in bed (not a the campground) I was reading the VW L-Jetronic Fuel Injection Workshop Manual. Under the "Fuel not accepted smoothly" section I read about the throttle valve switch. My throttle valve switch was connected but it dawned on me that I forgot to plug in the AFM! (Good call, Bus Daddy!) I ran out to the driveway with my flashlight, my wife pleading with me to stay in bed, and plugged in the stupid AFM. Very Happy I was back in bed a moment later to tell me wife that the bus was now ready.

It rained all day on Sunday but at least we were camping again in the bus!

Colin, I'll see you in a couple of weeks to give this thing your once over. It was my goal this year to have everything done up until this point so I could use your help and expertise in working out any gremlins. I'm glad to have made it this far.

Thanks again, Gary and TS.

Yes, I think so. At first, turning the AFM wiper a taste CCW would rev the engine indicating a lean mixture. I adjusted the big black cog about 3 clicks CCW to richen it up just a bit. Then I took it for another 15 mile spin. CHTs were in the 340 range, oil pressure was about 45 psi, and oil temperature was 200 - 220. This is a great engine.

Those are great numbers. As far as playing with the AFM. Seems to me like what you really need is an air/fuel meter. I wonder if Colin carries one? I believe what I have is called an LM2

Thanks!

Jon, will I see you at the West Side Bug-In this year? Also, I'm planning another VW social at Rahr Malting on June 15th. Hope you can make it.

Yes, my wife and I are definitely planning to go to the Bug-In this Sunday. Sadly, it will be without our Westy as it sits without an exhaust system, half its engine tins, and fan shroud waiting for me to find and refurbish all the pieces. Will you be there with your Riviera now that its running?

I would also very much like to go to the Rahr Malting social on the 15th. Please let me know what time once you get a better idea.

I will be finishing up some visit or another in Minneapolis on the 15th, free at 7:00PM, we have a fresh start scheduled for the 16th at 9:00AM.

Glad to hear you prevailed!
