The original drive flanges were missing. They were procured for a 1975, rally green, "Super Street" Baja Bug (over two decades ago!).

We're going to try these EMPI flanges from Appletree Automotive, up in Hart Michigan.

The fit feels/looks perfect. Now it's time install the retaining clip.

I had to grind down the tools contact surface a little, just to get it to fit deep enough to release the clip. One clip went flying into a pile of spare parts, took an hour to find! Again, the fit was perfect.

Last thing is the oil seal. These are O.E. seals, and here we had a slight problem.

Well, they seal... But they don't fit very well. we had to find just the right diameter tool to pound the hell out of the seal. The original seals didn't fit any better. We compared the aftermarket flange to a Type 1 flange, and the seal area is just a little different. Maybe there is an aftermarket flange seal? Probably. If so, we'll change them out later. Moving on the the drive shafts.

Without the oil seal in place, here's what the retaining clip looks like, properly installed on one of the output splines of the transaxle.

Drive shafts are installed. They are new aftermarket, but they fit perfectly. Even with the heavy duty aftermarket output flanges.

I don't know if it will be finished by then or not. I'm planning on the Kubel Korps meet in Ohio... We'll see.

I thought the Kubel Korps event was Kubels and Swimms only? I tryed to go a fewyears back and was told no 181's. They wanted War time only.

Ok, yes that's true. Schimmers & Kubels only. But I know a guy... and it's more like a cameo appearance. A touch and go. More going than touching.

...And we're back to work on the 181. Special thanks to Perry (guest wrench) for torching out a combination broken tap, and some remaining threads from a broken bolt I drilled out. Good work! The spindle is safe, and in perfect condition.

Some people have more patients than others. Snap-on? More like snapped off (the tap). Totally my fault. Just was in too big of a hurry to get all the drums on, before the holiday weekend.

Decided to replace the swing arm bushings. Turned out to be very easy. The original bolt and washers were in excellent condition. We cleaned up the the treads (tap & die), and simply inserted the new bushings by hand. No press required.

It's interesting to compare the originals with the more recent O.E. bushings. The new ones look like they have more contact area. New one on left,

Surprisingly, no corrosion where the busings were seated in the swing arm.

This tool works great! Drums hadn't been removed in at least 40yrs, if ever.

This project has been going on so long, I can't even remember where we got these drums. They get degreased, masked, and painted satin black.
