I bought 2 Things last summer, one is running great, the other is in the process of being restored. Last night I came across an Empi Sportster, no engine or title, hasnt been running in "5 years" says the PO, he is asking $700. What are your guys thoughts on this one. I have an engine from my 74 Thing that is being rebuilt that I could throw in this for the summer.

How hard is it to get a title for these?

Looks like a lot of fun and worth $700 imho.

This may help if the last registration was not in MO (see sec 4):

I'd be sure to get a bills of sale for both the bug / pan and the empi, just in case you need one or the other.

Don't use the state trooper inspection DICKS in soco. I just titled a tube buggy last summer. Needed donor title for motor, trans, and suspension. For frame they wanted a mso for frame but accepted reciept for enough tubing to build the frame. I would be sure they will look for vin or mso on chassis and body and proper related paperwork before they run all parts to see if stolen. Lost title is a whole other deal that will result in a lost title being mailed to adress on the lost title. The state trooper inspector in rolla was more than helpful. Good luck.

I don't think it has ever been titled. Is that an issue?

The pan was most likely titled at some point, some where.

Most States do not require a title for ownership transfer of vehicles over a certain age.

Most States allow for purchase of a surety bond in lieu of title when a title is otherwise required.

Most States only require bills of sale for major components like drive line and chassis.

Read your MO regs.

Here is another. Note "custom vehicle":

Oh, here it is:

Here is the way to get a title if you don't have one.

http://benboyle.com/blog/?p=16

I exactly did this and got a title for my 1969 pan in about a week of mailing all the information. Just make sure your vin checks against any theft.

From what I gather, this is what any titling company does too.

You will not get a title but will get registration. Once you have it, you can take it to local DMV and get a new title in your name. Because of the reciprocity among states, you should not have any trouble.

If you take this path, check nada.com for actual price of the car and make sure you have a reasonable value compared to that.

Check out my street legal in mo thread. I just titled, registered, and insured a home built tube buggy last august. Piece of cake with the proper paperwork.
