Depends how the job was quoted and how much you can trust them. If I was paying by the hour and they were doing extra work that I had been unable to see the need for, I would want to go and have a look before agreeing to extra costs rather than relying on messages. How else would you know they are actually doing this extra work you are being charged for? |
I take your point. They gave me a fixed price for the painting, with a reduction for the (unskilled) hours of labour I would contribute. That's why I've spent days under the car sanding and seamsealing. We shall see how that pans out. I'm at the car today to settle the final colour for the roof. Gobi Beige (L80K) was a VW colour in 1968 so I'm going to see how that works with the Lotus White (L282) and the tan and brown interior.
Yep, that's me, all browns and beiges: down to earth, very ordinary. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

It's taken a few weeks but we have the body in paint. Last week there were still some imperfections to be sorted out, like here:
Today I got the news that the body had "grown a skin" during the weekend. So this is where we are at present.
I'll only be able to get there later in the week and will post photos showing off the two-tone paint. Caramel over cream, I think. Looks good on an ice-cream too. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Mmmmm...
Watch out for people wanting to give it a lick or two.
It is all downhill from here.
It's been said that something boring is "like watching paint dry".
For some of us, watching paint dry, it's one of life's great moments, up there with the birth of a child!
Remember to stay grateful and genial with your body shop, if at all possible.
You will need to be back there.
Some 'assembly rash' is inevitable; there will be battle scars from the mantling process.
There can even be cases where seals will be thicker than anticipated, gaps and fits will get wonky, and significant work is needed to set things right.
Also, shopping carts in parking lots can magically roll uphill, idiots will go to the deserted far corner of the lot to park nearly on top of you, and shovels in the garage will inexplicably fall in the night.
All of these things conspire against a freshly-painted car, guaranteeing you and your painter have an ongoing 'working relationship'.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

I think I've made a friend for life in the painter guy. We are kindred spirits.
Parking lots? Too many idiots there, so we'll have to go in my wife's already battered Honda. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Look what the postman (USPS) delivered from the USA yesterday:
A genuine and in good condition original 1968 Ghia sales brochure, with Lotus White and Gobi Beige two of the available colours. Now you know why I chose Gobi Beige for the roof. (I could have had black, but there is just a little bit of the rebel in me. Besides, Racoguy has black over Lotus White on his Ghia already, and Michael has black over white. In a small town like this we have to be different.)
Not a good photo, I know, but I'll replace it with a better one later. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

A guy from Medford, Oregon advertised it on the Samba and I snapped it up. I'm still looking for an original owner's manual and an original toolkit. That would complete my collection I think.
On another subject: Have you noticed how may people with '68 Ghias are running their restoration threads on the Samba? We are either more gregarious than other owners, or we are just here in greater numbers because we have problematic cars. Perhaps we should start a separate thread just for '68 owners. We have cars that fall in the phase between the all new 67 and the settled 69, and we have those odd seats to distinguish our cars from others at a glance. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Yes but us folks with 1960 Ghias still enjoy following the trials and tribulations of the restoration....as well as the triumphs and celebrations..... _________________ 1960 RHD Karmann Ghia |

And so do all of us. The more I work on my car the more I see how the same they all are. Maybe we are too! _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Off topic from your educational and entertaining thread, but since you bring it up... going beyond just 68's, it'd be fascinating to survey what year Ghia people have as well as what level of restoration has been done. Might give us a fun data point about which years are getting/needing the most love _________________ 1971 Ghia coupe. Assume I know nothing and you'll be pretty darn close to the truth. |

You're too subtle for me today, Darrel. Is it the grammar? Should I have said, "68 owner's manual"?
An apostrophe, absent or in the wrong place can get you in a lot of trouble. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

If I could just find my '68 seats.......mine had 69's in it. I did see a 68 owners manual posted but the guy wants $295US for it. Too much
