Admin note: Continuation of original thread here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=494917
I've been posting over the past few years on here, but uploaded my photos improperly and lost lots of them in the thread. Making this new thread to properly catalog the build. Enjoy!
The day I got this car in 1999 (my first car):
Picking it up in the fall of 2011 to haul back to Omaha NE for the restoration to begin:
I immediately began tear-down to asses what I had to work with:
I slowly began to fix easy items that I could reach until I gained access to a more appropriate garage setup:
I pieced it back together and got it running for the first time in a few years and took it on some small drives around town (mainly to keep the motivation high):
Then we moved into a new house with a more fitting garage setup so I got serious:
Let's do some engine/Trans refreshing:
Time to replace those old worn out pans:
And while we're at it, time to clean up the underside too:
Now on to the body work. Let's start with making a removable rear apron and replacing that bent up front apron with a smooth one:
Now for the endless journey of sanding, smoothing, sanding, smoothing; sanding and smoothing:
And back on the chasis to sand the wiggly bits:
Now to the body shop for some finishing work and paint!:
Primer!!!:
Hauling back from Paint for Re-assembly:
Reassembling some bolt ons:
Starting to put things back together:
Headliner Installation:
Windshield Install:
Carpet install:
Chrome cleaning:
My wife helping with brake bleeding:
First cruise:
Some updated exterior pics:
New wheels (BBS 16X7):
Updated engine shot:
Before/After:

Outstanding. Great chronology of the bug and the owner. Love the pic of the 2 front fenders in the living room. |

Fantastic. I love the color you picked. I hate the Ducks t-shirt though.

Great work. This a great example that absolutely deserves to be in the builds and projects sticky thread. |

Thanks for the compliments all! Stripped down the seats to the frames today to prep for paint before reupholstery. Found the original assembly label! Anyone know anything this tells me?

Looks great! That seat color is going to look sharp with that exterior!
What part of Omaha are you? I have visited there several times, and plan on being back in a few weeks when my RAZORBACKS are in the CWS _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

Love your build man! Randomly came across it and completely blown away! Mostly because I have a 1974 1600 Bug and I'm spraying it the exact colour. Toyota 1G3 colour code Magnetic Grey (Bought the paint yesterday) I'm still in early days, I'll post some pics when I'm done. Hoping to end up looking half good as yours. |
